I fear the problems at JLR might be the ‘LR’ bit having to support the ‘J’ bit...

Let alone the other issues we all know about that are outside of manufactures control.

Ten years ago race legend Pete Littler created a one off which JLR could have copied. A 500 BHP F1 racing Pectel ecu’d Jag 4.2 S/C engined beast shoehorned into a Disco mark 1 with bespoke role cage and much more. Currently for sale at www.woodlandcc.co.uk at a mere snip of £49K!
27.6 Avg. MPG *according to the ad LOLOL!

Top of head I can think of two, both of which were heavily trailed to media etc.

RenaultSport Clio RS16

Alfa MiTo GTa

I imagine there are other examples.
Very good, I forgot about those.

Here’s the link to the actual car - I suspect the average mpg relates to its humbler origins as a tdi😜 https://www.woodlandcc.co.uk/used-land-rover-disco...

YES - it looks like they started at the front and only had the back to go...

They went for a liquid lunch with the designer of a certain new Aston Martin who had started at the back and only had the front to go..

After 8 pints each they both went back to their respective offices heavily intoxicated and did the 'final touches' on their respective masterpieces....

I wonder if Mc Govern will move on after the Defender is launched. He's created three distinct brands under the LR oval. If they are cancelling the halo projects - for understandable reasons - perhaps he will be tempted away to a car maker eager to make popular SUVs.

This was cancelled about 4-5 months ago. Old news being typed again because of what happened last month. This was well before the announcement of cutbacks. Great car but not enough to plough money into for a few sales. Very niche market.

That'll be the best thing for LR. Finally someone who isn't all about fashion can have a chance to direct LR exterior and interior design to a new era.

I hope not, the last thing the automaker I think you’re referring to needs is a more senior managers from a company reeling from dreadful strategic decisions and a legacy of poor quality and sub-standard customer service.

I wasn't thinking of a particular automaker. I'd be interested in who you thought I meant.

If interested to be pinned down to a brand, I was thinking someone like Kia or simply let.

My initial thoughts ran to Lotus. As they are moving to include SUV’s in their range and since the Geely acquisition have recruited senior level stylists, engineers, marketing, PR people and indeed a CEO all with a JLR background. It is going to be interesting to observe the outcome over the next few years.

I never considered Lotus. Yes that would be a logical and interesting move.

The upside of the troubles in China etc is we are getting more supply of cars here in the UK. Sticking the new 3.0 Ingenium in the Disco can only help drive sales in the current market,
When is this engine actually going to be released? It has been rumoured for years but is taking ages. JLR are no longer a small company volume wise yet they have only managed to bring out one new petrol and one new diesel engine (both 4 cylinder ingenium) in the last 10 years! The V6 and V8s (Jaguar design, Bridgend production) have been given notice and the V6 diesel was a joint Ford/PSA design originally. I know LR are the volume but I am hoping (against experience) for Jaguar to bring this engine to the UK market in a sensibly priced XE.

Still a shame as i would have loved the 5.0 V8 in a Disco (albeit in standard "sleeper" form without throwing the accessories catalogue at it)
I remember the last time LR offered Discovery (3) in the UK with a V8 engine - the 4.4 BMW I think it was but it could have been the 4.4 NA version of the Jaguar unit that replaced it. Labour pretty much killed off any remaining demand with their zero-notice higher RFL brackets (March 2006). LR responded with massive discounts on existing stock - at the time I was selling Mitsubishis and several of our customers were being offered brand new very high spec V8 Discos for £35k or less. Not surprisingly, LR soon dropped the V8 Discovery from the price lists.

The V8 Discovery continued in other markets (last being the 5.0) for years until replaced by the 3.0 SC, which was dropped last year in Europe across the entire JLR range except for the F-type. JLR claimed the cost of re-engineering to meet the latest regs was too high for given demand. With that in mind, why is it still available in the F-type? Can anyone provide an accurate answer to that? What is different for the F-type (apart from the V6 being the backbone of the range) - how much of meeting the regs is the engine itself and how much of it is the application (weight/gearbox/aero etc.) - just curious.

Should be spending money on the jag XJ, XF XE with new hybrids and face lifts instead of these limited editions making no money, wasting time and resources

I doubt JLR ever even fully intended to build them. It was probably all a marketing exercise to keep JLR in the spotlight and looking like a 'cool' company, run and engineered by passionate petrolheads.
