RE: 2019 Ford Focus ST gets 280hp and eLSD
Discussion
My wife has just got a new Focus, an ST-Line X model with a slightly detuned version of the 1.5-litre engine out of the Fiesta ST, so basically as good as you can get at the moment before the Focus ST arrives.
I’ve only done a few miles in it, but it is seriously impressive to drive. I’d imagine the proper ST will be fantastic and a really great all-rounder, but it has some seriously stiff competition, especially at the price it’s at. Looking forward to seeing the road tests.

Given the higher displacement and higher power output it's pretty much guaranteed to be lower in real world driving. I'm going to say it'll hover around 25 mpg given that the outgoing 2 litre model averages around 27-30 mpg for most owners. No doubt the reviews will quote the urban figures as 48 mpg and extra urban as 69 mpg or something equally ridiculous though.
All told, 30mpg is a pretty good average for the performance, but on a motorway run I genuinely expect this will achieve high-30s/low-40s. I'm sure my dad's old ST225 did low-30s on a long run, and a mate with a 2.0 ST250 used to average ~30mpg with short motorway journeys and local hoons. I agree the the quoted figures are often unrealistic, and would add that it goes both ways... I've had people claim ridiculously low mpgs as a bragging point e.g. "Ooooh, my ST is a bit juicy, I only get 4 yards per gallon"... in every case it has been someone picking worst-case figures (usually hooning in first gear, from cold over a short distance) sometimes with margin for exaggeration on top. It's as disingenuous as me claiming my E-class does 38mpg just because I once achieved that out of curiosity, at 53mph, drafting a lorry, with everything turned off (which I did... but it's hardly typical).

Of course, the speed people drive on motorways varies widely. I run mine on Momentum and at 80 I'm getting low 30s. Pushing 85-90 which is more my cruising speed if conditions allow, it's 30 or high 20s. I never sit at 70 in the lemming train of idiots that can't maintain a constant speed so don't know what mine would do, but I guess mid to high 30s is realistic. Slipstreaming a truck at 56mph and 40+ mpg would be achievable but I would say to anyone who does it that they need to get a life. You see people claiming all sorts of ridiculous mpgs like 50 mpg in a petrol ST "on a run" but rarely are they realistic for your typical 70-80 mph cruise that most drivers do - they are nearly always done slipstreaming a truck at 56mph on a steep downward gradient with a strong tailwind to boot.I agree the the quoted figures are often unrealistic, and would add that it goes both ways... On a small point of detail, the article is wrong about the diesel. The old ST had 184hp so 180hp for the new one is cobblers. The correct figure should be 190hp.
The car itself looks great, albeit pricey. I’ve got an ‘18 ST-3 that was only £22k new - but I’m sure the deals/ discounts will improve on the new one given a bit of time...

I really admire this generation of Focus. In the metal they’re squat, taught and muscular, particularly with some nice wheels. The ST looks wonderful and will doubtless be a fabulous daily hatch back.
I've found it to be a bizarre mix of looking absolutely spot on from lot of angles but a bit dumpy and fat from others in the flesh. At least it's an interesting design though and this ST looks very good in the pictures. It does bode well for the RS version. Lemming Train said:

Such a shame that Ford said goodbye to that fabulous 5-pot for the ST & RS. What a belter of an engine that was/is. Tuned up to 400hp it had some real shove and enormous character. Wallop!

I know what you mean, five pots have always had plenty of character . The first I can remember experiencing was in my brothers Toledo all them years ago, it didn't do a great deal to be honest but it sounded good doing it. Don't Audi still use them, I'm sure a friend's S3 is a five pot? Maybe her's is a generation old now though to be fair. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
