One day after writing this we get confirmation that our new office is moving closer to home, so my commute is cutting down 30miles round trip to 10miles round trip. The move isn't happening for another year, but looks like I will be in a shed sooner rather than later

Expect the boot to be full of water in 99% of them. It's normal but easy to fix with a screwdriver, some cleaning solution and rags and some thick foam strip from Screwfix.
I love mine. Costs me £1.67 a month to tax, £20 a month to insure and can get 2 months from a tank of fuel which costs about £45. Depreciation seems to stop once they get to 8+ years old as they are all £1500 for a decent one so long as it doesn't have moon mileage, regardless of age beyond that.

I do want a new shed but as soon as I get in the saab I just remember how rare to find a car in that condition for £450 would be again. STIfree said:

I think that's fair tbh. Shed life is fine as a daily for yourself, but when transporting kids about it's reasonable/sensible to give strong consideration to safety. I don't mind driving a crap old car, but I wanted something decent for my wife when she got pregnant and now that we've got a baby. One of the reasons I got rid of the E36 328i and went for the E91 330i.Parent + Child Parking FTW.

I got my £500 Saab 93 aero 2 years ago put 45k miles on it but it have spent £2k on it in that time.
Yes £1k of that was the clutch but the rest it’s just been tyres, brakes, oil changes.

Eh, my last car was a Citigo, I'm okay with piddly little motors, I don't have much choice either way The previous owners were a pagan couple, and the pentagrams are supposedly a symbol of safety and protection...
I don't mind people looking at my car and assuming I'm a satanist, perhaps the fear of invoking a curse might mean people will leave me alone

I've got a 2008 polo bluemotion which I've taken from 118k to 170k. I put a new turbo on it a couple of years ago (£1500) and now try and change the oil every 5k. I'll look at refreshing the suspension next year, even if that costs me a grand it's still a drop in the ocean compared to what a newer car would cost in depreciation / lease payments.
For me, better the devil you know.
Been doing the shed thing for last 6 months for the tip runs etc. Started with a £150 zafira which served its purpose quite well but the insurance and tax was over £100 a month. Got double purchase price when sold
