I gave in and washed the Mondildo.

First one since buying it in November. Plenty of salt on it was driving the parking sensors crazy (I guess thats the issue anyway).

It looks like a new car after a quick wash with an old sponge

It also unveiled some scratches I'd managed to put on the roof when loading crap into it the other week. Kinda felt bad now the car was clean, so went at it for a minute with a bottle of polish that's probably half my age.

What about a replacement gearbox for the XC70? Surely they can't be too hard to comeby. If that's all that's the matter with the car and you know everything else is solid then why not speculate a gearbox?

Or even a replacement XC70/V70 and swap the good stuff (wheels) from yours across?
Three words - Fifteen month old laugh

To be honest I've just had enough of it for a day or two and I really need a car for work so need to get a replacement/stand in sorted ASAP. I haven't necessarily given up on it completely yet, we'll see what happens and luckily it's stored safe at the moment so I won't rush into anything.

Quick check on ebay suggests a replacement gearbox would be £400-500. Only problem then is what if that's a bit crap anyway.

Phone Graham Lange at Horton Cars. Graham is an expert in these boxes and will be happy to discuss your options, if any. Seriously, do this, he's a good guy.

A (likely terminal) update on the sheddy XC70.

During the repair of the rear main seal and core plug (which in itself was successful), the mechanic mate who was doing the job lost most of the gearbox oil from the gearbox (not sure of the mechanical ins and outs of this but that's by the by now) and had to subsequently refill the box with new.

This refilling of the box has had a pretty crap effect on the gearbox itself, in that now it just doesn't really know what it's doing or what gear it should be in and is thumping home rather than the lovely smooth action previously.

Not wanting to chuck more money at it having already (stupidly) put some nearly new tyres on it and spent out for the oil leak repair so i'll likely just try and flog it spares or repair or worst case just scrap it. Shame as it's a beauty really. So if anybody wants any spares from a 2004 XC70 D5 let me know!!

For it's replacement as i am currently without car, i'm going to look at a 1.9 tdi Audi A3 later, advertised for £750 with 140k odd miles and 12 months mot. As long as the clutch/DMF is ok it should be fine for some shedding for the timebeing.

Bloody cars!! laugh
To the uneducated, why would topping up the oil kill the box?

Is there a run through sequence that has to be done to get the oil everywhere?

From what I've read and what the parts guy at Volvo suggested, when you get to that age and miles and put new fluid in, it can drag all the crap out of the bottom of the sump. The solenoids that control the gearbox are also magnetic so all the crap gets sucked up into the gears and on to the solenoids and bad things happen.

Also there is a set procedure I think where you drop a third of the oil in the box and refill and do this three times to get all the old fluid out. Again, outside of my understanding but I think that's the gist of it.

There are earlier in, though mines a 1.4tdi . Paid £1200 in Dec 2018, did 22K in a year in it. Did usual service stuff like belt / water pump etc. Did go a bit mad and buy a 2nd set of wheels when the ones on it were found to be bent (usual issue with Audi 17") Got a deal on some cheap coilovers so now its riding low smile . Replaced the front discs because of vibration (awful drilled things on it), temp sender, door lock (vag microswitch) and a few free fixes that needed no parts. CD player packed in so gave me the chance to fit a bluetooth radio. Returns 50 - 62 mpg. Taken from 116k to 137k and no plans to get rid. E91 probably more likely to go first!

I'm thinking little bits of clutch are now blocking the valve body

The very idea of working on one makes me shudder

grumpy C1 shed has been misbehaving nono and left me stranded last night after picking up my fish 'n' chips when the battery decided to die. Despite my best efforts at bumping it down a bit of a hill it wouldn't have it so had to abandon it and walk the couple of miles home which involves a really big hill that nearly killed me. My nearest mate is at work all day so can't jump it and I need it tonight so found a garage at the end of the road who'll sort it out for 100 bar including a new Bosch heavy duty battery for £70 and will bring it back to their garage.

I've only got myself to blame as I've known the battery has been dying for weeks. Kinda glad it happened locally when it did as I'm down in Sheffield tomorrow and if it'd happened down there I'd have been proper bksed. It's not cost me a penny since I bought it mid last year so will begrudgingly take this unplanned expense on the chin irked. Feckin' cars!

Makes logical sense. I had a E39 530 where the jets got blocked in the box and it had to have a complete rebuild, although that's a known problem on them and not through refilling the oil.

I'm not too sure how committed you are to the garage to sort it. But if it were me, I'd be on Eurocarparts and getting a new battery from there (normally a good % off with their many discount codes) and swapping the battery myself with a 10mm spanner. Probably be a lot cheaper and most likely the car will start straight away and you'll be able to drive off there and then.

Batteries die, it is no fault of the car it is just one of those things. I too would just buy one and fit it myself, take more than a 10m spanner though incase there is a bracket holding it in.

My shed has the original 13 year old battery still, waiting for the same thing to happen to me although I always carry one of those tiny, magic battery boost things.

Of course, that's what I would do normally as I have the tools and it's a 10 minute job, but without wheels to go get it (missus is in Edinburgh at the moment in her Astravan) that would require a bunch of taxi journeys which when you add up all the time, cost and hassle is really not worth it when the garage guy at the end of my road will sort it for £30. I've checked the price he's charging me for the battery and he hasn't loaded it - or if he has it's no more than what I can buy one for as a retail punter for the same spec.

I need the car on the road for teatime tonight so I don't have the luxury of ordering a battery from somewhere cheap and waiting for delivery.

Fair enough, you do sometimes just have to see what the value of time/cost is and pay the bit extra for ease!

I had a similar issue before, was stranded, phoned breakdown recovery to come and jump me off. Drove straight from there to Euro and got a new battery which I fitted in the car park. From then on I've always had a couple of loose tools in a safety bag in the boot, comes in handy more than I expected hehe

So in borked XC70 replacement news, the Audi I went to look at was quite a lot shonky and had awful tan/dirt brown leather seats and both electric windows didn't work, so I left it there.

I did however find a nice (relatively) Accord 2.2 cdti ex estate, 2005 variety, 190k, mostly Honda main dealer service history and everything apart from the sat Nav works. Also just had 4 new tyres in December. MOT'd until June.

£500 in the end, picking it up tomorrow...what can possibly go wrong!!

Shall post partially shonky accord updates tomorrow!! laugh
