My shed 07 shed avensis failed its MOT on emissions on Monday. Produces smoke/vapour to the extent it would obscure the vision of others.

Its on 186k miles and i want it to reach 200k. Covered 24k in my ownership.

Some cataclean and some spirited driving sort it?

Then if it passes new oil & filter, fuel filter & air filter. Or do these before retest as the MOT man suggests?

My 2000 Honda Accord 1.8S passed its MOT without a flinch.

I might treat it to a wash - I think it's only been cleaned once in about 2 and a half years of ownership...

Well done, and you got a free apostrophe into the bargain. Did the certificate mention the brake's, tyre's or the emi's'sion's?

I wouldn't normally bring something like this up but shouldn't your question be punctuated with a question mark?

Problem with a lot of sheds is they get under your skin and you get a sense of pleasure bringing them up to scratch again.

Bought this little lot to do a suspension refresh on my manual Saab 9-5 Aero Estate.

Have only done the back end so far but has improved massively. Polys haven't really changed the NVH either. Just made it a lot sharper.
It's impossible to get OE spec Shocks or better, for my omega MV6. Unless I were to spend £££££££ I don't really want to fit Elite spec ones.
What's on there isn't too bad after 232k. But I know it could be better. Wishbones wear out for fun.

Depends what the smoke is. Oil? Then nice new thicker oil, might help. Or not.

Hmm, i did have to top the oil up the week prior to the MOT. Was on a steep hill and got a low oil warning message on the dash. I stopped and checked the level, just over the minimum mark.

The mechanic said he felt the fuel filter was the cause.

Not much to report from shed Lexus. Passed an MOT the other week with only a few advisories, that was very unexpected. I was pointed out a blow on the exhaust though, between the cats and the centre silencers so will see how I go about getting that part replaced. Also I'm having issues with the ABS activating on the last 2-3mph when braking. I replaced the reluctor (abs) ring as I had an ABS fault and it's took the light off but now I have this issue, needs more attention when I have the time.

Other than that, comfy daily wafting

Going to pick this old boy up at the weekend hopefully.

Would greatly appreciate any tips upon what to check/look out for as I've never owned a Volvo before and I'm hoping to take the family abroad in it next year without having to spend too much above the shed purchase price.

2002 Volvo V70
2.4 Petrol, Auto
110,000 miles
MOT March 2021
Service History (Volvo up until 64k)
Recent service
Cambelt, waterpump done

Many thanks for any pointers.

I have so much want for a bargey Lexus!! My Mondeo may have to be sacrificed in the new year for one!!

On the Mondeo front, nothing has gone wrong, it drives really well and looks great (in my opinion). No expenditure to report, although i do need to give it a service at some point!

What logic ? I mean if it's blocked, your car won't run very well obviously.

I tend to replace fuel filters every 30K, or when they rust through and start leaking.

A bunged up fuel filter will cause starvation, cannot see it causing colossal oil usage and smoke laugh

My gut feeling is injectors or a boost/turbo issue.

Don't waste your money on just a service, fix it before you service it! And maybe find another garage if they are diagnosing excess smoke to the point of obscuring the visibility of others to just a fuel filter. I can tell you it just isn't the fuel filter without even seeing it!

Is the engine management light on - and if so, can you get the fault code? How does the engine run? Rough idle or sudden drops in power could be injectors.

I hope your gut is wrong, but I see the logic. I will run some cataclean stuff through it and have it retested and see what happens. If it passes Il have it serviced and carry on. If not it may be new shed time.

No lights on the dash at all. Except the low oil warning when I was on a steep hill last week. I stopped and topped up within 1mile at a petrol station.

Thanks all for your thoughts.

Slight hiccup on my 4x4 grand vitara which had been going nicely albeit at just 26mpg.
Took it off road again and managed to clonk the rear silencer, which in turn has fractured the inlet pipe 3/4around the weld. Sounds great tbh but the exhaust was about to drop off so managed to get a big jubilee clip round the fracture for now.
Managed to get a local exhaust place to order one in for the weekend at £120 fitted. I can get one for 95 quid less discount on ECP but I don't fancy exhaust fitting on the drive tbh

Looked after a lot. The 8 years i have owned it has been garaged all its life. It's a bit sorry for itself at the moment as I am building a front mount for it.
