The Joy of Running an Old Shed

Ouch, that's horrific. I couldn't stomach handing over 25% of the car's value each year just to be allowed to take it on the road. The cynic in me wonders if it's a ploy to encourage perfectly healthy vehicles into the scrapyard earlier. Would only take a couple of years driving without tax for the £1000 fine to have paid for itself too!
^^ You're exactly right, the government is trying to "encourage" you to change to a greener car by taxing the old ones. This is why high-tax vehicles are priced lower, whilst horrible little eco boxes cost £2,000 for a pile of noisy bouncy rubbish, just because they have 99g of Co2.
A Kia Picanto (£30 tax) costs similar money to a Mazda CX7 (£565 tax). Mad world.
What's the Shed experts on this 90s Avensis?

Any issues to consider for these engines? so tempting to chuck it in for boring daily duties, if its reliable

My requirements were something practical, auto, heated seats, HID lights and not a diesel. The 9-3 wagon fits the bills and hasn’t cost much to run over 2 years.
I’ve done just under 11,000 miles in that time, would change cars if there was anything else that fits the same bill but without the daft road tax however it would be false economy to switch so I guess I’ll keep it for another year. At 2 years this is the longest I’ve owned the same car so it must be doing something right

Maybe I'm a stingbag but it looks expensive? You should look for a private sale

Metroshed got stolen by some toerag, now with the Police. The Minor is in roughly 92748 pieces so no can do. Solution? Shed. Specifically a Rover 25 for £650. 22k miles, needs CV boots and the blower needs a resistor as it only works on half the speeds. Ah well, 4 new tyres and had new exhaust apart from flexi.
Our 1.4vvti Corrolla continues to excel at shedding and returning 36-37mpg around town. Wife loves it. Zero rust despite being 18yrs old. No timing belts to mess with, and the clutch took 4hrs fitted for £300.
£17 per month I think road tax is what comes out. Still looks smart too, for circa £1k for a very good one I don't think you can go wrong.

Someone nicked the Metro? My god! With any luck, I’ll be experiencing the Joy or Shed tomorrow with a £600 Impreza Wagon. Non turbo, short MOT, 128k. My son has already got his eyes on a couple of parts for his own Impreza.
Hopefully it’s as solid as it looks in the photos, needs a good clean and then will be put into action as the tip/diy store/sh!t carrier.
If not, and it fails the MOT badly, I may have to break it - not told the wife that bit

I'm about to leave shedland, i've just blown the budget on a 508SW. The ride on the old Mondeo is nicer than the 508 but Montys time is coming, its in need of an MOT in 1 week and isn't going to go through without work. So he will be off to the classifieds. If i could have found a decent MK3 or MK auto estate cheap then thats what i would have done.

Yeah, not good. Thankfully is apparently intact but forensics have it for now. We'll see how hammered it has been.
I feel your pain. My old Rover 416 GTi was nicked off my driveway years back. Insurance excess was more than the value of the car. They found it a few days later dumped in Harehills, annoyingly the scrotes had eaten the Drifter bar I’d left in the gloveboxstevemcs said:

My old Micra shed is called Monty as well. Still going strong on 95K, just passed 22K in my ownership.
I've had a few auto sheds over the years, Mk1 Yaris most reliable by miles, Mk1 Jazz have autobox issues, K12 Micra has been OK but did need a gear selector fixed recently.
