Over-assisted steering aside, I've found that the Modus handles far better than it has any right to.

That's horrid

A brilliant shed then. Well, depends what spec. Does it share bits with the Grand Scenics that are clocks and turbos?
Yep, a Renault Modus. Based on a Clio but with more from for the Pope in the back. In Privilege spec it came with cornering lights, auto lights/wipers, digital climate, pan sunroof and a West Highland Terrier. Still smells of piss and has more dents than the miles suggest.

It’s the 1.6 16v which is surprisingly spritely. Steering is overly assisted as already mentioned and the gearing is awful for Motorways. That’s not an exhaustive list of negatives!

I would say so, you couldn’t class them as ‘non essential’
My local mechanic was closed during the first lockdown, I imagine it will be the same this time.

Just a case of if they will extend the MOT grace period like they did during the first lockdown
We closed last time even though we could have remained open, as far as i'm aware we are planning to stay open this time.

There is not going to be an MOT extension this time around, we'd already have heard

Garages are considered to be essential category so can remain open if they choose to, mine is luckily

Merc ML is in for its MOT today (expires Friday) so was hoping for a cheeky free 6 months tbh but not the end of the world

1.9tdi auto now sporting some proper wheels (from a Merc) with Winter rubber. The alloys will never go back on, because.......well, black steel wheels!

Love it!!! And yes black steel wheels are so much cooler than alloys, interesting to see the Merc offsets/ET works well on the Passat, wouldn't of known.

My MOT place have confirmed that they will remain open

Insurance renewal came through this morning, £471.44 which is an increase of almost £50 compared to late year. Online comparison websites are coming back at lower so will need to give them a call.

Insurance, tax, MOT and a oil service will bring the overall costs for a year to around £1,000 which is half the value of the car.

Clearly I’m not shedding properly

Looks about right to me price wise... your insurance is a good 40% of that, bet your tax is 10-20% also.

Price up a PCP +insurance +gap insurance +main dealer servicing on a similar new car to see your savings

Tax is well over 50% of that!

08 9-3 Aero wagon, specifically the 2.0T petrol with an autobox. Highest brackets in emissions annoyingly

I wonder if some people are ringing these cars onto logbooks from similar cars that don't attract the higher rates?

There must be a temptation...

They came off a 2009 C class and do sit inside the arches a little. I tried with small spacers all round but the standard wheel bolts only went in around 3.5 turns (bit dodgy even for a shed)

I tried some longer bolts but they fitted the rear fine, but were too long for the fronts. She now sits with the front wheels a little inside the arches, no spacer and standard bolts and the rears with a small spacer and longer bolts.

To be honest, though, I was being a bit of a tart as it’s not glaringly obvious even without the spacers but as the offset was a little different, I just wanted to push the steels out a little with gear I had laying around.

Centre bore is larger on the Merc wheels. I’m a “spigot rings not required” type of guy so didn’t bother with those.

Yeh the age there is also a factor, my Saab Aero is highest emissions bracket also but as its a 2000 plate its around £250 a year

Think its around 2007 they bought in the newer prices on the high brackets

That's why I love my 2011 9-3 TTid - £30 tax annually means it's ridiculously cheap to run...if you want to run diesel that is, hidden gems if you want a silly low price bracket car.

Very cheap but for me I didn’t really do many miles pre lockdown, around 6k and I’ve done less than half that this year so diesels just don’t make sense for me

What's the CB on the steels? Anything more than a mm's difference I'd be sticking some on. Speaking from experience, a wheel fooking off is not a fun experience. Had 7 of those B5.5s now, the best daily in the world. Only had one auto, my "lifetime" car would be a 130 6-speed 4Motion with chrome rails and solar sunroof in Inky Blue or Colorado Red. Anything you need to know give me a shout, bit of a VW history here.

First house reno project sale going though woohoo! So I'll be in the market for a daily estate shed hopefully mid December, how exciting.

I'll be wanting something reliable and double boring so prolly Jap, e.g. Honda Accord wagon, Mazda something wagon, or similar. I will steer well clear of a Subaru Legacy estate as I will definitely like it too much, as it'll need to haul ton bags of rubble about & general renovation materials...

Full thread budget in the £500 range I recon, to be fair if anyone has anything they're considering selling let me know! I'm M3 corridor / Dorset area.

Again, very exiting stuff..

NB I foresee the purchase going something along these lines: 'Does it have an MOT?' 'Yes...' 'SOLD!'

I've just bought my first ever shed. A lovely 145K mile Merc ML 270. After owning a load of nice cars and then life going kaboom this is the first time I've bought a car for just over a grand and it feels great. Quite liberating actually.
