The Joy of Running an Old Shed

Well I have to say I'm delighted to be back in a shed, a £900 Volvo S60 D5... After writing off my V70 in 2020 I bought a Citroen Cactus, a fine car to be honest but I did miss the Volvo, I saw this one advertised and jumped on it.
eBay https://ebay.us/40Cc0m
113k miles, generally nice condition but definitely not cherished. It needs a cambelt, a big service and will need tyres soon, an engine mount will need doing. I'll fix a few niggles but I'm blessed to have Lakes Wyboston Volvo breakers near me, and most bits are incredibly cheap from them.
I'll probably look after this one properly, as newer cars just don't do it for me. I love the comfort of these old Volvos, and the D5 (Euro3) engine is very durable and a joy to drive.
How come did you buy a Citroen Cactus? They are cool fun hatchback cars, but nothing to compare to a V70! For having driven both, I would prefer a 500mile journey in a V70 over any 50mile journey in a Citroen Cactus (Of course, people used to go on holidays in the 70's in Minis and 500s, but why would you do this to you in 21st century - when so many sheds are available )eBay https://ebay.us/40Cc0m

My E91 BMW 320d is still working nicely. Just about to pass 200,000 miles.
I've also bought a set of Goodyear winter tyres on steelies for £50 (with plenty of tread) so I'll share a picture of that when winter comes. I would've got some decent all seasons, but the Landsails that are on it have 5+mm tread everywhere so didn't want to throw them away yet.
Has a vibration at higher speeds which I think is a driveshaft. I'll investigate when weather is warmer

I have an F30 and contemplating running it into the ground. It's only 87k at the moment.

Are these Laguna 3's? I get confused between the various versions. They do look good and very cheap at the moment. Any engines to avoid?
These are them. Not the prettiest, but not terrible in saloon form.
Engine of choice for me is the 2.0 M9R engine @ 150 bhp. (Torque is a bit peaky, but OK).
Don't be put off by the google results of the M9R - they are notorious for stretching chains and the injectors seizing in the heads - but this is mainly on the Vivaro and Trafic vans, where the windscreen seal is inadequate, and the rain water runs over the top of the engine causing all sorts of issues.
Regular oil changes, and we have a few with 220k and very very few problems. (Touch wood)

Gearbox is on the way out on my polo bluemotion at 187k.
Vibrates like a bd at certain speeds / revs like the space shuttle on re-entry. Anyone driving past must think I've got Parkinsons.
Used car prices are crazy at the moment. I'm torn between getting it repaired (£795 all in with collection and delivery from a gearbox refurb specialist) or binning it.
The problem is that at the prices I'd be willing to pay (circa £1500) I could just be buying someone else's problems. A mate just bought an 09 plate mini for £1600 and it's used 2.5 litres of oil in 1000 miles.
Any thoughts?
Better the devil you know! I say fix the Polo. Vibrates like a bd at certain speeds / revs like the space shuttle on re-entry. Anyone driving past must think I've got Parkinsons.

Also, Mini is a Peugeot engine, piston rings fail, it burns VAST amounts of oil, and in turn, will destroy catalytic convertors for fun.
Failed to proceed last Friday, turned the key..nothing, not even turning over.
Called out the RAC and it turned out to be the starter motor which was probably the original. Weird that it just failed with no prior warning but that's how it is sometimes (apparently).
Got a tow start and then within 100 meters on my way to the garage red oil light comes on followed by ABS light, power steering light and finally angine light. Turn car off and recall the RAC who arrive after 2hrs and tow me to the garage.
Replaced the starter motor and found that the lights were caused by a loose wire. Whilst getting all this done looked again at the gearbox noise and worked out it was after all the driver side driveshaft so replaced that.
All in £596 and it now feels as smooth as a Rolls Royce!. Whilst the £596 isn't ideal it's better than the £795 I had prepared myself for the gearbox.
Onwards to 200k and volume 2 of this thread!

Great update slk32..!
My day was spent finishing the interrupted work on the brakes on my Peugeot 307. I also changed the rear springs and shocks with 20 minutes to spare before heading to Manchester for the rugby.
Things I’ve learned: (1) don’t listen to dealers who tell you 14 year old rusted torx bolts can be re-used (2) things take longer than expected even though none of it is complicated (3) there’s always one tool you need that you don’t have..!
Tomorrow’s recycling.
PS how best to dispose of the shocks?

In my 20 years motoring I've always run sheds and sometimes multiples there of.
I run a Motorhome dealership so am lucky as can buy car pxs at trade, tho we never seem to get much anymore.....
Finally ran into a replacement for my 200k Saab 93 last month in this crackingly dull 2009 Passat Estate, 1.9 near base model.
However by sheer fluke 1 owner from new, 163k but fsh all from the same garage all printed on the same blue paper lol
Bit too nice for me tbh but very happy with it for £500 and everything works

Next job on the V70... £9.56 for two "quality" droplinks. I'm 80% certain that is what has started knocking/rattling last week, very annoying without a working stereo
Real shame the stereo isn't working, I've got the 803 one in mine and it sounds fantastic. How's the paintwork holding up on yours? Mines an 04 and is losing lacquer like you wouldn't believe on the passenger side. Making me fancy a change as gonna cost £1k to sort the paint!

The paintwork is absolutely fine on mine, though I have seen some losing lacquer - what colour is yours?

Well I’ve had an interesting 2 week I decided to chop the focus in for a mondeo which I only had a week as the turbo was smoking it’s backside off, cruise control didn’t work and a few other niggles so trader took it back but had already got rid of the focus so Car less! Being to look at 2 other cars in shed budget which I chose one but later that day was involved in an accident before I could pick it up
So decided against a mondeo like it’s a bad omen! I’ve managed to buy from a trader a 60 plate insignia estate elite with 100k miles for shed money as he needed rid of it due to new stock coming!
Picking it up tomorrow

Or because if it's a 2.0 CDTI, the oil pump is giving grief.... in these times, I'd be wary of a cheap car. So decided against a mondeo like it’s a bad omen! Had a look at the V70 on the way back from the tip (shocks went into the metal recycling by the way - with the approval of the woman working there, herself a keen sheddist driving a pristine 57 plate fiesta with 100k that she picked up for £100..!).
The V70 looks a lovely car in great condition, but sadly at £5k it’s outside shed budget.
Thankfully the 307 rides fantastically on new shocks and springs, so my head can’t be turned too much….
(If anyone wants details of the Volvo, let me know - I’ve got a photo of the car + advert).
