As for the TT, I quite like them, I think this latest shape is the best looking. Although I'd like to own a rag top at some point I've never been into them enough to buy one. I see the TT as the sort of sports coupe that you would run as a daily driver, for which I'd much prefer to have the tin top variant.
I think once upon a time convertibles were popular with hairdressers and the like, but to be honest whenever I see one these days it's often a balding, white, middle-aged man driving. Just saying.

I fit the criteria almost perfectly being white, balding and fast approaching 40 too. I have to say though I absolutely love driving my MX5 on a dry (I won't wait for sun) Sunday morning with the top down, it's a great escape for a couple of hours.
What it does provide, though, is an overwhelmingly competent way to enjoy a spirited drive, without necessarily possessing the ability, or requiring the effort, that can be the case in other cars. Those of an enthusiast bent may turn their noses up at such a proposition, but the truth is that sometimes a comfortable seat, a stable car and a bit of power under their right foot is all a person wants or needs.
In other words it's still a car for the girls, something more up-market than a Mazda MX-5 but not as fuddy-duddy as an SLK.
Shame 'cos looks-wise there is just a hint of masculinity about the front & rear ends that almost but not quite hide the still too curvy fun fair dodgem car shape.

The elephant in the room might be the Boxster but as daft as it sounds, there are plenty of people who want the “sports car” experience without committing to actually owning a sports car.
For the occasional top down pootle back through country lanes from the pub for Sunday lunch this would do grand. The other 99% of the time it’s a simple to live with car.

Bigger and more secure feeling than an MX5, subjectively better looking (what isn’t) than a Z4 and certainly more premium feeling than a lot of other manufactures efforts.

My preference would be for an older MX5 or a Coxster, as others have said. Indeed like a previous poster opined, driving a Mk1 Golf GTi on B roads is probably a more edifying experience, as you can access a greater percentage of its handling and performance more of the time...
I've got the pre-facelift 2.0 TFSI 230 Sport. Have been really pleased with it, genuinely a good fun car to drive. The light weight really helps and even in entry level FWD Manual form it drives well. I also love the minimalist design of the interior and the Virtual Cockpit.
Having said all that, I'll shortly be selling it as I've got a new BMW Z4 M40i on the way to replace. This facelift version of the TT doesn't move things forward enough for me to justify buying one.

commence weekly ph debate of the financially illiterate ...For me I test drove TTs a couple of times but could never get on with it. S-tronic is very poor compared to Porsche’s PDK and the car itself was basically a golf.

I've always found it odd that these lose their value quicker than the tin top TT. Perhaps the next TT will be a bit more adventurous in the styling department like the mk1 was? I've always thought the Pug RCZ was a better looking from the outside but the TT had the better interior (and cache I spose)
As for the three door hatchback thing mentioned above, in a lot of cases they simply look better. Sportier perhaps? In days of yore they were often stiffer than their 5 door half brothers as well.
