fking hell.

I think there are already 29 new cars based on VW's MQB platform. I'm struggling to see the point in SEAT already, let alone the laughable "stand alone brand" bks that is Cupra. What's the real difference between this and it's VW, Skoda and Audi siblings, "bespoke styling" twaddle aside? Actually, don't tell me, I don't care.

If we ignore this, will it go away, and then we can have some interesting new cars instead?
They are trying to do what Citroen have done with DS, etc.

Are car buyers that dumb?

In fairness to DS, I think there's a partial vacuum for 'premium French' that DS can attempt to fill, and the cars are carrying their own styling and personality quite well, IMO.

'Premium Seat' has already been done - it's VW and Audi.

Pretty sure the 1.5 EVO engine is a four-pot, not a triple.

DS7 with a worse interior. That’s how it looks now so by 2020 it will be 3 years behind even the DS7

Is it possible that I saw one of these on the M5 on Wednesday. I'm not up with current Seats so just thought it was some sort of SEAT suv with a Cupta badge that someone had changed the Seat badges and painted the wheels a dark bronze colour.

I'm struggling to understand the size. If this is smaller than the Ateca does it make it Seat's T-roc?

VAG model sharing is dull.

Do VW Group think they would sell fewer cars overall if they just switched Seat (and Cupra) off?

What are they for, which isn't already covered in the group?

Who says "I don't want any of the MQB products, not a single one, so I'm going to buy a Ford or a Peugeot...oh, hang on, what's that amazing Seat over there...?"
hehe

as my eyes traveled across each word, I had the strange sense of deja vu -- as if I had written them

I don't mind SEAT and Cupra and yet another distinct entry in the crossover segment

but all of that does raise the question of the business case; I should probably read up about the individuals within VAG who've insisted that things be exactly like this

For this brand to sustain itself and hopefully produce more interesting cars, it will need to sell some volumn, and SUVs provide the best opportunity, so that's not a surprise.

Hopefully sales of those will allow for more interesting driver focused cars, which will never sell as well as SUVs.

I do sometimes wonder whether people expect manufacturers to be a charity to the 1% of the new car buying population who want lightweight driver focused cars, producing bespoke cars at a loss to satisfy our needs.
Erm, surely they got the SEAT brand for that?

What's the point of a stand alone sports brand - which indicates that the management feels that the image of their sporting models is somehow held back by that of their core brand - and then sell non-sporting configurations exclusively? I can understand selling lucrative performance SUV on the back of the image built up by ones halo sports models (i.e. BMW Motorsport) but as of yet, Cupra has none such thing.

What on Earth is the narrative of the Cupra brand name that isn't already covered within SEAT?

A brand like this with "sporting" intent should launch with a halo product. A cut price Cayman for instance if they wanted to raid the parts bin. This would then be a proper marketing statement that would give them the kudos to build a profiteering SUV.

That their first bespoke car is an SUV isnt encouraging, though that its a hybrid is at least mildly interesting if thats going to be their future USP

This doesn't look bad, my other half would like it no doubt. I've nothing particularly negative to say, other than it is very generic. If the badges were removed, could anyone say which manufacturer produces it? The same could be said for many other cars on the market of course...

why didn't they make it a nice sensible estate with a slightly lower center of gravity
Because they already have....

And people will buy the SUV over an estate in droves.

Bugger, I thought I had my first concept car spot, it was in the same colour scheme as the one in the article as well! Just shows that even to car people modern stuff all looks the same!

I think the name must be a nod to the Cap Formentor, a point in north east Majorca. Quite a nice road up to it, and part of a road that runs the length of the island through hills and mountains.
