I thought they have you at the toll if you traverse the gap between in a time too quick therefore implying you have exceeded the limit.
I’ve heard that one some years back, but never seen it myself. I didn’t see a single police car or bike during our drive through France... though my last trip down to Nice I saw quite a few. Writhing said:
I’m doing a similar trip at the end of the month in my 1999 E39. Not sure if I’m looking forward to it or not.
Did you have AA/RAC cover?
It’s a lease car, so has full cover as part of that. Plus it’s less than 2 years old, only has 24k miles, and has just had a service. Did you have AA/RAC cover?
Only issues were 25mpg and cooking the brakes badly on a long steep downhill section of motorway, with numerous 110 down to 60 braking moments with an ambient of 40*. Brakes were shuddering badly for a while, but it went away once the gradient eased and the road straightened out.
Biggest drive I’ve done, and wouldn’t have been able to do it solo - having my old man in the passenger seat to talk to for the duration was invaluable.

In Spain? I just paid it to avoid any potential hassle next time i visit.
I've read a few things about people paying to avoid future hassles when revisiting. Not sure if that approach changes if different cars are used each time.
French approach to speeding has become fairly punitive. Could be worse, like Switzerland. I was sent something about "Great Road Trips" in Switzerland. Somewhat ironic methinks. Unless the drive is done in an invalid scooter you're likely to get nobbled.

Switzerland is the one country I stay close to the limit. I’ve read and seen some horrendous stories about penalties for getting caught even a reasonable amount over the limit - bans, cars and bikes seized & terrifying fines. No idea why anyone would go there for a driving holiday.

I really fancy a road trip, it's been years since I've had a decent one.
I'm off to Tuscany (and other cities of interest in Italy) in September. In the Lambo.
It'll either be an amazing, or frustrating road trip. I haven't dared work out just how many miles I'll be covering ...
