£30k for a "regular" one now

Can't see the value in a 60k 325i, personally. Some people (I guess two, or more, people were bidding it up) really like them.

Very much this, there are so many cars out there for that money that BMW wouldn't get a second glance from me

I think I'd prefer to pay retail price for a reasonably warm 3 series estate than have that turd.

I like an E30, but for that money you could buy an E30 M3, yeah it'll have more miles but still! You're not far off 996 GT3 territory, you could buy a Ferrari 308, take your pick of numerous Mercedes product, the list is endless without putting any thought in to it

100% correct. You're over E30 M3 money, you're bang in 996 GT3 country. Makes a 190E 2.3/2.5 - 16 look great value.

I love a BMW. I've had an E30 325 Sport and whilst I liked it I much preferred the E36 328.

Dear beards.

15K or so to spend.

Was all set for an E46 M3 but now the E92 has popped onto my radar.

The V8 appeals but the car seems too new and usable to be tucked away.

Depreciation on the later car will also presumably be worse.

Maybe something else entirely? Done 996 and not really got the budget for a 7. Wouldn't touch pork without a Hartech engine so choice is limited.

Occasional use for mincing, Fast road and attempting sub 8. Ideally 4 seats but not essential.

Ta!

E46 and E9X both have their own merits, and weaknesses which are pretty well documented (subfames, bearing shells etc etc). Not owned an E9x but done quite a few miles in them and ran an E46 M3 CS for a while. MattOz ran "my" E46 a few years after I had it and has also had an E90 M3, so there's at least one threadist who has run both cars.

Personally, at the £15k budget I'd stick with the E46 as you're at the lower end of the E9x scale, though I doubt you'll see much depreciation on either. I found the E46 to be a brilliant all-rounder, happy to mooch about, blat down Autobahns or be chucked about on road or track. A manual on the 18" rims is a decent blend. A CS at £20k is a pretty compelling punt, too. There's a reasonable chance it would continue to appreciate.

I think the V8 would be more expensive to run whilst not really giving any more pleasure; my abiding memories of those cars are the engine (bonkers when launched 12 years ago) and the fuel consumption (never over 20mpg). However, it's faster and will offer an incremental improvement in all dynamic areas and a more modern interior. If I was looking for a V8 I'd probably want a later LCi car with the revised engine (Post 2011?), though just swapping the bearing shells on the earlier cars will alleviate some of the uneasiness on that front.
