Can you still buy a CS for £20k? I thought they'd gone past that mark, but I'm not really up on BMW values. If you could get one for £20k , I think that's where my money would go.

What money does a W204 C63 start at? Great cars, but not really something to throw down your favourite country lane.

V8 M3 - in total free fall at present. Tons of dogs about dragging the good ones down too. BCA have a competition pack LCI car on 50k with a CAP clean of £16.5k, which it won’t make... Bearings - not if, but when. Throttle Actuators - not if, but when. Fuel consumption - horrendous. Very fast, but needs to be wound up to excite and then you are in serious speed territory.

E46 M3 - peak M3 - well documented issues and a ton of knowledge out there. £15k buys you a 50-75k car with bearings/boot floor done. Still subject to ///M tax, but at a lower rate vs later cars. Fuel consumption- 30+ on a run sticking to speed limits, 18+ in Sarf London. Reasonably fast, even by today’s standards, excites at much lower speeds, but if outright pace is your thing, then it would disappoint - 340bhp today is not what it was back in 2001...

I have put money where my mouth is and have been running an E46 M3 as a daily since 2016 to stop the miles piling on the GT3 and it covers so many bases the GT3 has been sorned since Sep 2018...

Rocket.

Higher miles but looks nice E46 with a lot of history and parts refreshed and on 18's, also leaves cash for some upgrades if that's your thing ?

https://classifieds.seloc.org/ads/e46-bmw-m3-immac...

If can live with 2 seats Gen 2 Boxster S manual but not sure on the mileage but engine shouldn't be an issue.

Puts the E30 for £60k into perspective again, huh?

IIRC I saw a CSL through auction at sub-£40k the other week.

Other random options I have no idea about:

That new fiesta ST got rave review on Top Gear
Maybe some form of Focus RS
Warm Megane / Clio
JCW type Mini
Honda S2000

Good info chaps. Sounds like the E46 is the one for me.

Re box/cayman, Having just come out of pork I think I fancy a change.

M3 cutters is the UK forum of choice?

Randomly I've just found my old E39 M5 on ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254410813678

What a car that was!

A manual SLK55 would have ticked a lot of boxes, what a pity.

The 'problem' with an e39 M5 is it's so good at so many things it feels like something that should be used all the time rather than occasionally. Which in turn means deep pockets in my experience.

XKR vert still remains my top desire at the moment....mid 2020 being my planned purchase time. Facelift in black with cream.

E39 M5 is a great shout, had an enjoyable weekend with one many years ago. Remarkably chuckable!

Related to nothing, I passed a 997.2 Carrera in a car park today, it just looked so right.

Right height, right width, perfect size. Just a bog standard 3.6 on those opened up five spokes.

Drove my 996 today for the 1st time in 3 months.

It’s noisy, hard and unrefined. I’ve missed it.

Ted on Chris Harris' Collecting Cars podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gss0wkG0x40

Gets me all misty-eyed thinking about the forum etc. Missing some of the old posters in particular.
