It’s collecting cars so it’ll go for silly money, with good 996 GT3s going at or below £50k, you’d have to really want round headlights to pay more.

I would guess somewhere around 50k. A "normal" (30k miles) mileage CS is 75-80k.

168k miles is a lot. Nothing but respect and admiration for the people who have enjoyed all of those miles.

I'm getting a trifle bored with rusty old BMW's so have started looking toward the three pointed star - can anyone give me an initial starter for 10 on AMG E55 and E63 estates and any probable pitfalls, no-no's and good things to look for?

And just as an aside just how silly a purchase would a sub £20k S65 be...

The 5-10k barge thread is one home of the Merc beards. I lurk, having similarly impure thoughts.

I'd recommend posing the question in 1-5 Barge. Loads of over-budget chat and several owners there.

Don't do it!
I went there out of a casual interest and now have an unseemly desire to buy something with beige leather, 4 doors and an engine capacity greater than 5 litres.
It's an easily transmissible disease, more dangerous (to your wallet at least) than Covid!

I quite agree but now half my day is spent either on there or scouring the classifieds for cheap S Class, CLs and Lexus LSs.
It's a dangerous game smile

996s are back in the 4s?! Where is this happening ( not having looked at all)?

I haven’t driven my 997 for some time. I loved doing a few long trips in it (burgundy, le mans, spa) and hope to do some more.

The S65 is perfectly sensible.

Which generation of E55 are you talking about?
I had an S211 with some Brabus tweaks, it didn’t hang about as long as the road was straight hehe

I have some BMW beardage but an ounce of Mercedes (or AMG) stubble so any generation of E55 I suppose?

Everyone seems to think a cheap S65 is a great idea with seemingly no pitfalls or problems whatsoever...

I suppose as long as they themselves aren’t the one buying it then it would seem so.
It was a 150k+ car when new, expect wallet emptying parts. I would look at how much things like discs and pads are etc. I would assume the highest tier of AMG tax is applied to parts specific to these.
Looks great though. You can never have too many V12 engines on the drive right?

The 98-02 E55 had a naturally aspirated V8 and rust
The 03-06 E55 had a supercharged V8 and no rust

If one was to dip their toe in the pool that is v12 engined cars, should one look for NA or does it really not matter?

Next Silverstone Auction coming up, there's a few bits I'd happily have for Christmas if anyone wants to buy me a present?
