Mate of my brother bought a 5xx McLaren, new. It was a complete dog and spent more time in the dealers than in the road. They never managed to get it fixed.

He sold it at a massive loss and bought a Maserati, which he kept a few months before he got board of it and chopped it in against another McLaren... a 720s this time.

He did somewhat learn his lesson though... the 720 was a year or so old and had already dropped something lime 30% of its list price.

McLaren are like a really expensive version of 1990’s Peugeot or Citroen... endless limited editions to try and keep the punters coming, with catastrophic reliability and residuals.

esoteric thread resurrection.

I'd quite like a McLaren 12C. When they came out I thought they were a bit bland, but the looks are really growing on me.

This one sold on Collecting Cars a few months back for c.£65k (incl. premium).

I'm a bit of a sucker for a blue car, so that does it for me.
I think the 12C is better looking than the later offerings. I still have no motivation to throw money at one.

barchetta boy had two - epic chassis and they do go really well... yawn... sounded like Corsa with a Peco exhaust... at £60-ish k though they are great vfm if you are lucky and end up with a reliable one. speaking of reliability - never understimate the propensity of V8 BMWs with lots of turbos to generate bills proportionate to the fuel consumption... so far this year it has been: The Cheburator household budget £1500 : £12000 BMW Insured Warranty spent... The match has gone into extra time, with the possibility of a new 4.4bi-turbo lump being supplied by Munich... I am sure I am not on their X-mas cards list... but the local stealership service department loves it...

2nd owner, bought from BMW at 42k miles, on 62k now...

Last Friday was my first time on track for about five years, and in something I bought specifically for the trackday for under £1000 including fettling.

And (ignoring the fact it was dog-slow on the straights) it was a riot!

Properly quick through the corners, and really adjustable on the brakes.

It's given me the hurry-up to get my E28 race car back together.

I can't tell exactly from the picture, but that could well be who's in the passenger seat!

It would explain the lean angle.

Well, after 62,000 hugely enjoyable miles - the 4C has gone. Depreciation: 25%. Not bad for the use Ive had out of it.

That is pretty commendable. My Z4MC had lost 75% of its value when I sold it to a mate at 50k from new. Back to mid 20s now, so only down 50% ... Mind you, my E46 M3 and GT3 have gone up by 100% since I bought them, so you win some, you lose some...

What is replacing the Alfa?

I went out to buy a Maserati GranTurismo S MC Shift - loved the idea. Loved a lot of aspects of the car on the drive, but I missed out on a particular car that I had set my sights on. Then I realised that in reality my 928 GTS 5-spd is more special and believe it or not a better car overall, despite the 15yrs gap! Hence I have been casting cheeky glances at the Giulia, now they are coming down in price a bit...

Its time to scratch the last itch...Italian V12.

Ive found an F12. The numbers line up. My vastly superior better half has given permission. The deposit (in theory) should be going down today.

Ive little idea what the future holds, but Im reasonably sure Greta and co will get this stuff banned sooner or later. Western govts will co-operate with such social pressures and my fear is sooner rather than later. As such, before its no longer possible to enjoy anything like this in any meaningful way - Im fulfilling a lifelong goal.

Ive had to both bribe Sarah with a Kubota tractor for the farm and the unspoken'ish promise that this is the last silly expensive impractical over the top car purchase. After this is done we will revert back to something smaller, drop top, girlier, cheaper. With a V8.

I do like the 4C, I had serious thoughts about leasing one before I bought my 996. The rear seats swung it, not that the kids go in it much!

This is floating my boat today...

Thats a Goodwood car I think. Usually seen at MM and/or Revival parked behind the pit lane grandstand.

F12 - nice itch! smile i think you are right... But I don't feel the itch for a V12 - I do feel the itch for a pushrod V8 with a lairy cam and a good chassis...

It is the Goodwood car, should scoot along nicely with a Zetec under the bonnet. I really need to go to the Revival, we were going to go last year, but that obviously didn't happen! Maybe next year...

When the Cayenne goes later this yr, this will be our first time without a V8 since…2010 I think! We’ve had petrol and diesel, NA, turbocharged and supercharged for over a decade. The HiLux is replacing the Cayenne to haul an ever larger pack of dogs around.

V8
V8
V8
V8 Bi-turbo
I6
F6
I4 Turbo

But I have never had a US V8... Love the idea of a 7.0 small block screamer... My brother had a Viper and still has a Hybrid Saleen Mustang...

I've been mulling these over, recently. Can't help but think they're where the supercar 'value' is at the moment.

Will be interested to hear how you get on!

Deposit is paid!

Its more than I planned, but its Dubonnet!! As far as I am concerned Dubonnet is the classiest colour that motor cars have ever been painted in. Combined with a 2016 plate, 2 yrs of gratis servicing and an amount of miles less than most of my shoes...well, the deal works for me.

Yes, there is a metric fkton of man maths involved!
