It's annoying/frustrating when you think how much 968 Sports & CS' were selling for only a few years ago isn't it, I considered them many a time whenever I got itchy feet with the various Caterhams I owned but never did it.
However, two things;
1) They look relative value against equivalent E30 M3 and other lightweight/limited build Porsche
2) Doesn't it make things like that yellow 996 look exceptionally good value in todays market
Every cloud 'n all that

Unfortunately the SY 996 is potentially a £25k car all in if you need engine work, hopefully not, but it still has the maintenance cost of a £60k car with >100k miles. However, two things;

Look what £25k buys you in terms of modern hot hatches, also a consideration, if you just want to go fast?
I don't feel too bad about ticking the 968CS off of the list, I found it too easy to drive and never had the challenge of a 911 for me.
It would have been nice to have the value increase of a 968CS, it has actually under performed the MSCI global stock index.
After the lack of challenge of the 968CS, I did move to a 993CS in SY, which I still have, it has comfortably kept up with a global stock investment, so it didn't work out too badly? Oh, and I get to drive it!
Never been my raison d'etre with any car

Agreed chap
It does make you look at the modern performance available, be it hot hatch, fast saloon etc, and you logically would have to think "why bother with old Pork et al" but, well, we do don't we
An early Boxster is a very tempting thing at little money, should have kept hold of my 3.2S with hindsight

Maybe I'm getting old but a 996 cabriolet is rather appealing now as a bit of a do everything

I really do get the E30 M3 - what I don’t get is the value proposition. I can also see why the 924/944/968 platform gets overlooked (unfairly) against the 911s of the era. What I don’t get is how the 4-cylinder Porsche gets overlooked vs. the E30 M3. I have had both, and dare I say it, a well sorted 944T or a 968CS blows an E30 M3 of any guise into the weeds. The 944 is also the product of homologation - it can trace its roots directly from the Carrera GT and the 944 IMSA campaign. In fact, the 944 was homologated for Group B racing too.
Probably answering my own question, but had Porsche campaigned the 944/968s in rallying or circuit racing, we would have lamented their meteoric rise, instead of the humble 3-series saloon.

I believe the 924 is now eligible for historic rallying which may explain why they've had a bit of an uplift in values. My N/A was a great handling car, just not very quick. I suppose the benefit of that is you can drive it flat out down your favourite road and know your licence is safe

Can’t agree with you there I’m afraid. L100NYY said:
