Many thanks for the comments/ replies. It’s a serious pain but there we are. I had really hoped it would be a cracking drive with sensible costs but I guess you can’t have your Kate and Edith too.

Re E46, yes. I did consider one (have had some excellent drives in them) when I was looking at 330s but couldn’t stomach the though of history repeating itself with M3 bills. I know that makes something of a mockery of me now considering a 996. However in my defence I’ve never had a 911 and I really enjoyed the brief drive I had in a C2 of affordable vintage. I think i’ll probably take a few longer drives this time before I jump in!

Re 3.4/3.6 I had read that the earlier cars were less prone due to a thicker wall and something else? I’ll do more reading and/ or look out for a rebuilt one.
I am going to have a drive in an E92 M3 just to see because you never know and the fuel economy in the 240 has softened me up from the heady heights of diesel-dom but if I can get a C2 for mid teens then I can get a little A1 TFSI or something nice fun and reliable for when the inevitable happens and it keeps the SL company making light work of my wallet!

Finally finished window shopping, and picked mine up last weekend. Couldn't be happier.

It's not going to be a daily driver, as there's no escaping that the fuel economy is pretty bad, with it just about scraping into the twenties if you're very gentle with it ..... which you wont be.

Having had an E36 M3, an E46 M3, and now an E92, it's great to continue on the lineage.

Fantastic! I've always wanted one exactly like that. Sadly never had the budget for one.

Enjoy!

Nice one Braddo looks like a lot of fun thumbup

Sadly can't help thinking we've got perhaps max 20 years of enjoying this type of car before the whole ecomentalist anti car lobby and nanny state ruins it for all of us, fill yer boots while you still can I say.

The unit next door to where I work is a body shop. They have pretty normal stuff with the occasional highlight. Last week’s was one of these. The interior was a lovely tobacco colour (at one point in its life) and the deep blue paint was a bit frilly in places but it’s in for a full respray which is heartening.

Haven’t seen one in ages.

The Cerb got it's first outing of the year this morning after a jolly good service, wheels re-done etc. Took a while to adjust, forgotten after 6 months just how quick it is. In the interests of curiosity, parked the SRT alongside the Cerb......

How is life with the SRT?
In a word, FAB! Wife loves it, kids like it, towed the caravan brilliantly (and did mid teens doing so). It's averaging around 18-ish mpg on mixed school run etc. Obviously if you drive like a ninny that's going to tumble but after trying Rangies, Cayennes et al, this is where I'm staying. Best bit? Nobody else goes past in another one!

Glamping.......

Hi Crook, I can't comment on the Pork side of things but I have just offloaded an A1 TFSI (150 cod) after 18k and a year and a bit and got rid of the A7 a few months back. Your err experience of the M240 reminded me of everything I couldn't stand about the A7. I shall be as Lib Dem as I can manage about the ring brand, Sport mode*, check, Manual mode* - check, barrelling into a nice country bend.......aaaaand car thinks, I know I'll go back to auto and into 8th just as we are seeing the limit point.....you really didn't want the gear you had, I know best. Add unreliability and gone. A1, to be fair didn't put a foot wrong, not even a bulb, but interesting? Nope. Engine note, anodyne, brakes grabby, gear change ok-ish, good on fuel? Better than a Cooper and better to drive but that isn't saying much as Cooper gearing far too high (104mph in 3rd anyone?).

I have just replaced the A1 with an St2 Fiesta and it is so far rather brill. Just hope it lasts!

Cheers

Thanks for the info on the A1. The MiL has one and I had it for a week. I was pretty impressed as an overall little scootabout and it felt like a nice thing. I’m no Audi fan particularly but I was pleasantly surprised.

I’ve heard / read nothing but good things about the small Fords.

Ideal emergency penknife of a car would really be Panda 100hp but that’s as likely to break these days as anything else!!!

A good friend ran one for a while then chopped it in for a 997 as it was cheaper to run but he never said anything but good things about it.

That tells me everything!

I think the reality is I’d like to have a look. I’d start to begrudge the car if i was only getting high teens on the mundane stuff. But as was mentioned earlier, time for this sort of fun is getting short.

Loving the Caterham Braddo, glad you got one sorted and that's a great spec. As the yoof would say.....

  1. welljell (or something)
I still have my (of that era) Caterham sales brochure and that's pretty much identical spec to one in there.

Do keep us posted on your thoughts & exploits thumbup

After the recent 996 chat I decided to sack off the company car yesterday and take something a little more fun to my meeting at MB World. Those G63's are big aren't they laugh

Hi Leins !

The WRX Wagon has been fondly named the ASBO-mobile by friends.
But it’s such a good drive, hence I’m on to my second.

Following the MM was a fantastic experience. The unofficial numerals we made up did help.
Although we were stopped on the final day by officials; told to remove (less happy Norwegian co-driver below...)

But we did get to drive through most of the stage ends inc. Piazza del Campo smile (GoPro screenshot below)

Nice move on the MM livery! Hope the Jag is treating you well too

I won’t be doing the Eifel this year unfortunately, but might head to Germany as the road trip instead next summer. Loved that run down to it a couple of years ago, it’s well recommended for any threadists who haven’t experienced it. This picture kind of sums it up for me, when the village of Daun goes rally mad for a weekend

With everything else so huge it really highlights that 996s are a pretty compact car.

Looking at what’s available on the market, early C2s in anything but silver seem quite thin on the ground.

Eifel Rallye is indeed a great event.

It was a bit cheeky of us to make up MM numerals. But it is an event on public roads so don't believe flouting any laws.
Pretty obvious the Z4MC isn't pre 1957 production also smile
