Lovely. Part of me would love to run it as a daily, but I think I'll stick to the one V8 BMW.

V10, manual, Suzuka Grey.
That would do nicely.
Not silly price either.

It does look a lot of car for the money these days but when I drove my mates at Oulton the gearbox was a real disappointment. Fine for the road but if you tried to change as fast as a 911 it used to baulk, a lot like the rest of the car when pushed.

I've only been a passenger in a V8 but I get the feeling it might just be the sweeter car.
Indeed, had two V8's then a V10 when they were new, V10 undoubtably more potent, but on track the ligther V8 was vastly superior IMO.

I bought an E61 525i with the rationale being that I would only have to deal with BMW problems and then quickly realised that I had too many BMW problems.

I've got 5 cars and a Van. A few months ago they were all broke and I mean on foot only. It was a real low point. I just kept reminding myself they are supposed to make me happy.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago; daily driver E39 needed a new block, second string E34 had a leaking gearbox, third string E38 suffered rusty underbelly fuel, hydraulic and brake pipes. I pressed an ancient 635CSi into action and hoped it would last otherwise I was using an M635CSi in winter.

Love how that's advertised as a "tip run" car. If money was no object I'd be chucking rubbish in the back of that rather than the aged Honda Civic I'm currently doing the same job in.

I could even sell the Civic and fill it up.

Once anyway...

It's the same Graziano box on all this gen R8s and Gallardos. It's reputedly very strong but the one I had in my R8 was not a sweet shift. I've read that they can be sensitive to adjustment (I guess like a lot of transaxles) so there can be good and bad ones. But then again they make a lovely "clack" as you move them around the gate which is great theatre. biggrin

I've been looking at manual V10s lately too. A V10 R8 came past us through a village on the weekend and I was reminded that they don't sound that great at 2k-3k rpm (where you realistically are for 90% of the time) - much like a pootling Ferrari V8, they just make "a noise". The V8 R8 I had always made interesting noises, no matter what the revs.... scratchchin

The exhaust note of the V8s is pretty much perfect. I love the idea of a 'clubsport' V8 with some weight taken out. One of the main places to save some weight at the rear of the car is to replace the heavy factory exhaust system, but I would be loathe to do it because the overall exhaust note/volume will almost certainly be worse with an aftermarket system (especially for track day noise limits...)

I’ve often thought that about a V8 Clubsport R8, some nice dampers and some polybushing, a set of nicely trimmed bucket seats like the (was it a) GT came from the factory and free a session with someone who knew their way around setting one up I reckon you’d have a lovely car.

What sort of weight are they standard?

I have 5 cars and 2 bikes. My record is having 4 of them road legal at the same time. Also been in your shoes with none, to much office mockery.

Even better if you can remove the front drive gubbins: rear wheel drive only, and less weight. smile

From what I could find they should be around 1560kg. The front-drive stuff should be around 65kg. Light seats, battery, exhaust are other major bits.
Then some small things add up like removing old-school sat nav/amp/extra speakers, some trim behind the seats, maybe a lightweight carpet set, remove trim panels in boot and engine bay, maybe even a polycarb window in the rear hatch, a fixed rear wing etc. Potential for about 130kg while still having air-con and comfy interior.

What got me interested was that in Evo's PCOTY when the R8 arrived, it lapped the circuit quicker than the 997 GT3 so there's a lot of potential!

The other option would be a Vantage (someone is building one on this forum) albeit I think you’d want to strip out a lot of what makes it special. I used to watch those old ring taxis thunder by and think there was a hell of a car in it-Aston missed a trick.

Gallardo LP550-2/Balboni is listed as a dry weight of 1380kg. cool

I may have misheard/misremembered but I think they talked about this on the Collecting Addicts podcast, how the V8 was the better car.

General consensus is that the V8 is the sweeter drive. I just felt the V10 gave me more of what I didn't need (power) and sacrificed quite a lot in doing so.

I think, without exception, every time I've driven a manual R8, I've snagged my thumb when selecting reverse.
