They've each popped up for sale over the years but I've never had the nerve or money to take the plunge. Any talk of Lotus Carlton's always draws me back to this Performance Car triple test though (photo from the more recent re-creation)...

I was offered a Lotus Carlton many years ago but it needed a fair bit of work and I wasn’t brave enough to take it on for stock!

Had seen the Senator previously but not that estate, looks an awesome conversion.

My first full time job was in a Vauxhall dealer around 1996, I've a massive soft spot for the big RWD models. I came so close to stacking a Carlton GSi in the wet, ran out of talent had a huge tank slapper and fortunately got it straight and continued by journey very slowly to the customers house laugh

In my first job one of our directors loaned me his Carlton GSi to take some samples from a farm to a lab in Newcastle. It was the middle of winter and I hit black ice and went sideways all the way down this hill to the bottom eek Damn thing stayed on the tarmac though.

Talking of saloons;

Tonight I’d like one of these svp. Drove and sold a fair few back in my Alfa days and loved every minute behind the wheel of them….

I had a 156 Selespeed for 4 years. Loved the way it looked, and it was ok to drive… but it was an unreliable POS… 2 engine rebuilds and endless gearbox problems.

My brother had a similar vintage 2l lx Mondeo… it was a better car in pretty much every area… ride, handling, steering, space… of course it wasn’t anywhere near as pretty.

We called it the sillyspeed at the time.

156 was a brilliant car, unless it was fitted with said gearbox.

I had many 147/156/GT/166, not one of them did I pick an auto (not that the GT was available as an auto anyway).

Fond memories of that Modern Classics shoot.
It nearly broke me - Peterborough - Plymouth to pick up the Alpina, all night in London, then shooting three 7 Series under the Severn Bridge for seven hours at night, then shooting an Impreza near Ebbw Vale, then Plymouth, then Peterborough.
Space of about 4-5 days.
Of course couldn’t quite compare to the original PC one because they had press cars, a week and a half and a huge budget. Also, for some reason, I was told to explain what the M25 was because apparently we needed a certain amount of boxouts per DPS in order to reach general publishing guidelines or something.
Still, was a very long night with some great cars, plenty of sketchy moments - such as when the drug dealer turned up in the middle of the cover shoot part (in a distinctly low key bright red C63) only to find the locals had called the cops in to turf us out from the bit in front outside their apartments.
Understandable to be fair. While we were being fairly quiet, the massively modified Zafira on straight pipes that turned up to gawp wasn’t.
Once we’d got rid of the police, the drug dealer looked like he’d just seen his life fall out of his whelk.

Then we had to essentially run away as some ominous looking blokes turned up with masks…

Big price for an old 6 series but look at the miles and condition. This garage stick is usually 'right'. Gotta be worth 10k as a keeper?

Another missed opportunity, I so very nearly bought three of these back in the late naughties, including Chris Harris’ old high mileage one.

Bill Stien who used to post on this very forum, his was the best though. Stripped of interior (though it still came with it), two Recaro buckets, cage and all painted inside in gloss white [chefs kiss]. It was sublime to drive, had been built to do a few hill climbs.

I had about £30k to spend but owners always wanted about £32k or £34k and we could never meet. I think we all knew they would sky rocket at some point but not to that excess.

At that price now I’d much rather have a 996 RS.

My last E46 M3 was Carbon Black with Cinnamon leather. That colour works so well with dark exterior colours like Black, Oxford Green, Seal Grey...

We were discussing this one in our 996 GT3 group chat (Porsche fwends), the Manthey kit is more than likely harming its value.

Which could change massively in the coming years depending on how Porsche treat Manthey going forward-look at the values of early pre buyout AMG stuff nowadays.
