54 plate V70, 126k miles. Outstanding nick, 700 quid. Bought as a shopping car and dog transport. Quickly realised that 20 valve 2.5 turbo permanent 4wd equates to about 22mpg, so not that practical. It's a bit quick for an old barge though smile

Trabi the perfect way in to classic motorsport?

What would be the best way, and by that i mean a good balance of pace, cost to run, enjoyment of driving and without being to difficult to get to grips with.

What would you hypothetically start with if you were had entry to say Spa, Brands and Silverstone with 80k?

£80k for the car or £80k in total to buy/run/enter/fix/travel/etc?

Trabant looked great, just not sure I'd enjoy being what is effectively a mobile chicane

This was the race series which looked like a whole load of fun and very varied grid

For an affordable start into historics I would look at -

Mini Cooper
Guilia
A30/5/40
Formula Ford
Ulster type 7
Capri
Escort
Fiesta
etc

Awesome cars! I hired a normal one (not a racer like the pic!) in Budapest years ago, and it was such good fun (and maybe just a little bit dangerous as well...). Shows you don't need power/speed to enjoy a drive driving

Being reminded how easily you can die is very exciting and makes you appreciate being alive that little bit more.

I love this thread, so feels cool to be able to (hopefully) contribute something!

The Masters meeting is great every year and is a real treat when the YTCC series comes (the ones with the Trabants) To flesh out some info on the cars above, the Alan Mann esque red and gold Falcon has nearly 700BHP and was allegedly hitting 160MPH out the back... similar pace to the GT3 cars from Blancpain the week before i was told.

The Trabants were a real crowd favourite, and the competitors were given dispensation that they could pass them under the safety car as one of them at least (there were two, the red one in 'race' trim and a blue one in 'road' trim) was unable to lap quickly enough to actually follow the safety car....

It is certainly worth a visit next year. Especially if you like wide arches and sideways cars.

As I near the halfway point of my two-week shed-dragging tour of France, two things strike me:

1. No-one should ever have to suffer the misery of towing with less than 300bhp

2. This is the year of the Renault 4 entering my life. I’ve put it off long enough.

Now if you’ll excuse me, there’s a pichet of vin dormir with my name on.

Apparently it's had two engine transplants. Mind, at 1400kg you can see why they ditched the last one.

I hope the build is better than the advert.

The steering wheel looks to be at an uncomfortable angle for the driver and the paddles look a little far away.

Not sure why you would buy that over a stradale or 348 Challenge as I assume they would be similarly priced.

I quite like it.

I’m a bit of a Mondial fan-boy anyway and the idea of more power is always good. And I always respect it when people do projects like this just for fun. The wheels quite suit it.

However... I’d want mine with a clutch pedal please. With 500hp I’d want even better brakes. And while I generally think Mondials handle well, I’m not sure I’d really want 500hp in one.

If I had the money I’d take a slightly tuned Mondial for the road and a 346/355/430 challenge car for the track.

Wouldn’t mind borrowing it for an hour at Donington though!!

Yep, I’m with you. The grey car definitely needed to be more blue.
