It's horses for courses and all that - I have only ever once been out in an E30 M3 and I distinctly remember being underwhelmed by the lack of pace coming from an E24 M6 and E34 M5, but I have no doubt the M3's sporting pedigree and once stripped out and tuned for a track it would probably be glorious.

I loved my E30 M3
Great car - fast enough for me when I got it, beautifully balanced, very exploitable and loved being wrung out.
Also, arches and spoilers.

Likewise, when released I didn't 'get it' with the E30 M3; sure it handled nicely and it was nice having a close ratio dog leg 5 speed from factory, but the early 2.3 engines felt asthmatic low-down, and never really felt like they got going compared to the E24/E28 M cars. No doubt they had impressive competition careers later on, but when offered a new one to 'run in' for the dealers I politely declined and stuck to my old M635csi. In times when speed limits weren't religiously enforced, it was possible to make progress a lot easier in the M5/635csi than the M3 given the surplus of power and torque; best of all the 6 cylinders in the bigger cars still revved out to the limiter nicely, and to my ears sounded better than the S14 4 banger whilst doing it.

I bought a 190e 2.5 nearly 20 years ago now with the intention of using it for fast road/track exploits, however after driving it and realising it didn't even have as much going for it as an E30 M3 I fortunately managed to move it on for a profit. With some weird form of LSD that didn't really work as you wanted and that self-levelling rear suspension, it was definitely Mercedes' idea of a fast saloon, rather than being a good fast saloon in my opinion.

I was in a fortunate position that when I had my M3 my older brother had an m635CSI which was on better suspension and beautiful compromotive cross spoke split rims and I think an Ansa or somesuch exhaust (my younger brother incidentally at the same time had a 325i touring on Hartge 7 spokes and a bit lower / stiffer too with a Janspeed - the thing absolutely howled at high speed).

The two cars were absolute chalk and cheese - the 6er was great for blasting about on big roads and you could make very decent progress or just mooch about in comfort with that great lump up front but twisty road time and the M3 came alive and the 6 got a bit wrestly and awkward.

Yes you had to be on it in the M3 for it to make sense but that was sort of the point.

The E36 M3 was probably the ideal combination of both cars.

Imagine having the necessary to be able to race it cloud9

As an aside, it's the Peter Auto Spa Classic in a couple of weeks: https://www.peterauto.fr/en/events/spa-classic/

It's crazy that you can get to, stay and get in for three days of some incredible racing (the entry list is insane) for less than three days at the Revival. Obviously no warbirds or other side shows and I'm absolutely not saying that the Revival isn't one of the best events there is, more that a weekend away at Spa is such a bargain.
