Yup, father has every issue of CAR in his mancave, every one from the first up until around 5 years ago.

I also have a letter from the late great Phil Llewellin and he mentioned me by name in his column. This issue in fact -

I have that somewhere.

Great article on the lack of progress in 1990.

Blimey they’d be disappointed now.
You’ll see me mentioned biggrin

the appeal of the 5 series is only relative compared to the horrible appearance of the rest of the range
The one in the showroom was markedly more appealing due to being ‘not black/black/black’. Nice wheels too actually but absolutely colossally stupid priced M60 model or something:

I used to love his column in Car along with Alexi Sayle's and the music producer in New York.
Didn't enjoy Atkinson, but Sayle and Kitman were decent for sure. Car was THE publication wasn't it?

It's a weird phenomena isn't it, the whole "murdered out" black/black/black look? It's visibly awful and yet so commonplace.
This seems the case on many higher end cars, especially the wheels.

Take the latest FF Range Rover, an excellent design IMO and can be specced in some excellent combinations yet look at the number of rich yet tasteless buyers choosing black wheels. I don't believe there's a single car in existence that won't look better by avoiding them.
Red 145 Cloverleaf on 155 5 spokes.
I am a bit biased, mind

But otherwise I tend to agree, even if I do own two cars with black wheels.

I hate black wheels. Currently own two cars that left the factory with them, with no other colour option. Can't justify spending the cash to get them painted.

145 Cloverleaf and 146ti were both brilliant cars, loved every drive in them.

Would love an Alfa Red pre facelift Cloverleaf or a Proteo Red ti

That is some collection of CAR mags and nice that you made into print.

Relating to the XJS Cab in the picture a friend asked me a few weeks back to go and look at their Dad's XJS which had sat unused in a barn for 20 years.

Long story short what I thought would turn out to be a rust bucket couldn't have been further from the truth, it was time warp, 34,000 miles from new, zero rust.

Tyres were flat but pumped fine, we checked oil and hooked up a battery pack and crossed our fingers, on 3rd go it roared into life and run perfectly on all 12! It then drove out of the barn even the brakes worked.

Unfortunately / fortunately I don't have room for it but it's a lovely thing, no doubt could still throw some big bills and yet to see if it can pass an MOT.

Rare things these days. Think we're down to double digits for the Cloverleaf. Mine was rescued from the back of a compound for £750.

It has cost six times that to get it sorted, other than the aesthetics. The 306 GTI-6 is the better car in almost every conceivable area, but there's an effervescent silliness about the 145 that means it's a fun thing to drive around in almost everywhere, if dynamically behind the Pug.
Lack of a sixth gear, a driving position like you're dropping the kids off at the pool and sexy-looking seats with no lateral support whatsoever not withstanding, it's the first car I choose to do a short trip somewhere.

I was sorely disappointed when the transporter turned up with a truck load of Fiats and Alfas and on board was a 145 Junior.

I thought, hoped, that was my next company car. Alas, I received another Punto Sporting.

Alfa company cars were only a few months away, thank goodness.

Although I absolutely loved my Stilo Abarth.
