I couldn't stand the whining supercharger noise every time it accelerated.

Brave pill !!! I think you need to find things that would bankrupt not pocket money cars that cost less than the first year depreciation

I did... The point is I have yet to hear a comment along the lines of "nice car, shame about that awful whine". The Supercharger whine is what makes these cars and every car person who has been in my car love the whine.

I never liked the S-Type, particularly the early versions with the really nasty interior trim and plastics.
In the last few years though, I've grown to quite like them, particularly the V8's.
I drove a very baggy NA V8 that I fully anticipated I would hate with a passion and was genuinely surprised how much I liked. It wasn't the last word in dynamics obviously, but was pretty good for the size and weight and way it just wafted along with no squeaks or rattles.
As a discrete, comfortable and effortless way to get about with plenty of get up and go when you need it, these (and in fact all the V8 powered XJ, XF & XK8's) are hard to beat. Build quality is generally good, plenty of spares support and there are a lot out there so garages aren't too scared of them. As others have mentioned, rust is the thing to look for and their image is a little low rent, if that sort of thing bothers you.

Nice for you if £7.5k + high running costs are 'pocket money', but that's not the case for everyone so don't be a smug git pleaseon a family hatchback ... look for a rusty Italian exotic with a noisy camshaft that's also insurance cat C perhaps ....
