i really hope that Cayenne isn't the one from the infamous thread that was here a couple of years ago. The one where the owner of it had upset one of his neighbours and the neighbour came on here to say that he'd urinated on the door handles!!

ah, good times
Now that sounds funny,

My boss 5 years ago offered me his Turbo. 70,000 miles, FPSH, black, dechromed, tints, stainless steel exhaust, full spec with PCM, Bose, heated seats, power tailgate. Coolant pipes fixed. 10 years old he asked £9.5k

Decided against as I was running a 997 C4S at the time and wanted something reliable with lower costs so spent £30k on a 2 year old Evoque.

Reckon I’ve just about hit the ‘break even point’ due to difference in fuel and purchase costs

No regrets really, reading this
That Cayenne would have been the pick, and a great foil to the 997 C4S.

Are you remembering to factor in depreciation on your Evoque?

I just bought one of these recently for my dogs although not as low mileage. Mine has a full history (15 services, all Porsche or specialist), a host of invoices, full set of Porsche allows with Pirelli winter tyres and 19" summer wheels. Coolant pipes done, new battery etc

A little leggy at 120k miles and a few small jobs to do which i'm ticking off bit by bit, nothing difficult, just silly things like getting shims to solve a saggy driver's door (happen to them all), fixing the keyless as one of the door handles needs replacing etc.

All for the princely sum of £2600 ! I stuck a plate on it, machine polished it and it looks a million dollars (kind of).

Loves a drink but then, so does it's owner!

That sounds like good value, I know the mileage is a lot higher than the one in the ad, but not sure I can see why that one is four and a bit grand dearer ?

Seems a lot of money at £6750.

All in all, close to sensible for that outlay.
The AMG from two weeks before was braver.
Other way round!

The mechanicals on that old AMG are very reliable. It's only the bodywork that you need to keep on top of. This on the other hand could suffer a catastrophic engine failure at some point basically writing the car off.

Honestly that says more about you than the car!

I ran one of these for three years and bought it with a great service record. New engine at 50k, new transmission shaft and a host of other repairs. It had 80k on the clock and I took to 120K.

And then in space of about two months, it fell off a cliff. The electronics started to go and the ignition didn't recognise the key anymore. It went back to Porsche about 3 times. Radio died, Fuel pump died and coolant tank cracked...

Must say that I did love it. Amazing drive for such a truck-sized lump. Now have downsized to a diesel Macan. Which kind feels like the other side of the scale, fuel wise.

Bought a 90k 2003 Cayenne Turbo 2 years ago for £8,600. A few bits were sorted under warranty, but 2 years later the only thing I have had to spend is £250 on a new drive shaft. It also seems to be worth more than what I paid for it too.

Ok, 15.5mpg is a tad on the thirsty side, but the overall cost of ownership, for the amount of car you get isn't bad.

The Evoque has dropped £11k in 4 years, The Cayenne probably would have lost £2k-£3k as I took it from 70,000 to 100,000 miles
I drove 30,000 miles in that time
13mpg vs 30mpg in fuel is a difference of about £8k
Tax difference would be about £1k
Evoque has cost nothing to run - maybe under £1k in servicing. Cayenne Turbo I think would have cost more than £2k-£3k in repairs so evens stevens

I think yours popped round the other night. Sorry about the mess in the back of the Passat.
I would be most surprised if anybody could pick out individual stains in the back of our Passat.

I bought a 2003 Cayenne S 4.5 V8 back in January. It had a short MOT, weak boot struts EML light on, and needed a set of tyres. Silver with grey leather, heated seats, glass sunroof, premium audio, 19" alloys, full electrics, sat nav, etc. Good spec and also had the safer coil spring suspension (which admittedly isn't as nice as the air suspension, but ultimately less to go wrong). Picked up for £2600 and came with a fair bit of history, including recent replacement of the coolant pipes.

Fitted a new battery and had the EML reset, which cured it and also seemed to improve he functioning of the electrics. These cars do have a lot of electrical components, so a weak battery reduces their function as well as throwing up various warning lights. New set of Pirelli P Zero tyres and it flew through the MOT.

I was very impressed by the build quality inside the cabin. Everything in there felt top quality, well put-together and still all solid. Compared to the ML I have, was on a different level.

Also drove really well for a big lump. Handling was good enough, and it pulled hard in every gear. I felt the V8 was a bit muted unless on full chat, but on idle the engine was very quiet and smooth.

Personally I think they have aged well, and I find them more attractive than the latest models. They have a brutish presence about them. I did think they were ugly when the press photos were launched back in 2002.

In the end, it just wasn't my cup of tea, so it was sold. For the fuel it drank (circa 16 mpg), it did not give me the driving satisfaction. My E39 M5, however, did over 20mpg in all conditions and always put a smile on my face. Got £3500 for it, which just about covered what it owed me in the end. Someone got a bargain there, so I think these can be had for a fair bit less than the one on the article, and it doesn't necessarily mean that it will be a money pit. My old one should give it's owner trouble-free motoring for a good while, even though it will drink like a fish!

You have to bear in mind that these sort of cars that are complicated machines at 15+ years old, always run the risk of throwing up big bills, regardless of how they have been maintained in the past. It's the nature of car you are buying so just be prepared to spend money on them when they do go wrong.
