It's not personal and you shouldn't take the fact that our country has gone downhill since the flood gates opened - because it has. We might be richer, but we are definitely less safe. You might care about the economy (most people who don't see themselves as British really do hence they'll do almost anything to get here and stay) and less about the country as you aren't actually from here and don't have the same emotional investment in it. Indeed you said in another thread you like London but not the UK. Well, we Brits care about Britain and our country and that goes beyond our back pockets which all you business school types go on about with regard to Brexit etc.
I care about the economy a lot, precisely because of my emotional investment in Britain. Rose-tinted little Englander types have this idea that Britain was somehow wonderful before the war and shortly after, but it wasn't. People had bad teeth, poor housing, and poor nutrition, resulting in conditions like rickets. They also worked long hours in hard manual jobs with poor working conditions, just to put enough food on the table. I know this, because both my grandfathers worked in such jobs. It's also pretty hard to argue that we're now 'less safe' now than back then, given the number of in work fatalities back then - figures from 1947 show that over 1400 people died just in coal mines and factories, compared with 144 total fatalities in work 2017/18. 1947 figures 2017/18 figures

The economic improvement of this country has made everything more affordable, and has meant that there's been a lot of investment in shared infrastructure. People have better housing, food is a very low proportion of earnings, multi-car households are very common, people go on nice foreign holidays... and it's possible to earn the money to do all of that while sitting in an office drinking a nice cup of tea.

Am I bothered by people coming here wanting to make a better life, and be more economically prosperous? Not especially... they're often taking a lot of the harder jobs, and are adding to GDP and tax revenues that can be spent on public services for the aging population (many of whom are retired, so aren't working/paying tax). What does irk me is people moaning about them; typically it's people who have had free education and all the advantages of being born here, but who haven't made as much of their lives as they would like. It would make me much happier if they worked hard and made a good life for themselves, rather than moaning about immigrants, and lusting after a past version of Britain that never actually existed.

Sincerely,
A White Brit

And ST4 has failed in life so seems to want to blame everyone else but himself. Bloody immigrants coming here, shagging his women and taking his job.

If it wasn't for them he would be a millionaire fund manager and sleeping with models. He really would. smile

So do I got some good pals who are asian. That wasnt a racist comment its an observation, im entitled to communicate what I witness. I know loads of white people who are bad drivers too. I find it a coincidence - bham, crash, audi s3, driver fled - want £50 bet donation to charity as to ethnicity of driver when police provide further info? My confidence is based on what i see regularly.

Again - RIP to the victims

Edited to add - just spoke to my sikh mate, said Asian the minute i told him...........

I'll be the first to admit i was very right wing, I'd like to think I've matured and see people as good or bad, not black, brown, white or even ginger, I'm in the North East and we are white chav scum centric, they regularly knock down and kill innocents, they just tend to do it in st cars

What an appalling and unnecessary accident. Unfortunately a lot of the comments here are appalling and unnecessary as well.

We’re all reliant on only written words to communicate here, there’s no proximity, no body language, and consequently the words you choose have quite a bit of power, and things can be misunderstood too, but there shouldn’t be any place on PH for racism. Unfortunately, stupidity isn’t as easy to deal with, and the two seem to go hand in hand quite often.

I read this thread to learn more about the crash and perhaps to find some of the informed perspectives that do still exist on PH, but instead there are pages of child like guesses and assumptions that focus on race above pretty much anything else.

I can only imagine that I’d feel very unwelcome if I was reading PH as an Asian.

Grow up.
Your removal of context is boring and childish.
You clearly are not interested in the subject, views on the subject, attempts to discuss or educate others, indeed anything that is different from your views is clearly an issue, so all you have left is some lame comments. It’s attitudes such as yours that are more of a problem than anything else.
Pathetic and obvious.
Maybe you could tell us all which “Asians” you are referring to after your response to my post? Malaysian, Sri Lankan etc etc......Oops, you slipped up son.
Obvious is obvious, suck up that forum oxygen whilst ignoring the tragedy and real issues.....

You’re an embarrassment with a post such as this.
On the plus side though, you do make it much easier for everyone to evaluate your worth in this topic, not a time consuming task to be fair.

To think that 2 kids are dead and a poor mums life is in ruins and all you can do is try to score some pathetic internet ego points says more about you than anyone else.

Sadly it started out as you would have thought, however as is the fashion these days it’s more important for some to seize the opportunity to berate and bully others when it comes to race/social issues and get some attention rather than try to educate or indeed patiently and openly discuss in the hope of genuine change.
There are many on here who will post well informed anecdotal information in a calm and rational manner, but then the usual pattern begins where those who claim to open minded simply insult and bully all who present a view that distorts their tragic media trendy social utopia.
They are generally more aggressive and less accepting of others. This is,of course, tragically hypocritical and very easy to spot, it’s head in the sand ignorance and far worse than the often open and obvious hate they claim to be trying to address. It also usually becomes about the poster as opposed to the core subject no matter how tragic.......see my previous posts as an example.........

If you want to see examples of point scoring and twisting of posts in an attempt to discredit, take a look at the 'other thread'. Their tactics are even more obvious than this rubbish. Kids, eh ?

Well it didn't take too long for this to go way off topic did it?

It's just so sad for the lady driving the BMW whose children will never get to grow up - and for all of her family. My thoughts are with them.

Although it won't really help them just now, I hope the driver of the A3 is apprehended.

This is page 9.

Who wouldn't feel this way, hearing of this senseless loss ? Its just that if all we ever posted on these threads were repetitive 'thoughts and prayers' messages....it would make for pretty dull reading, as I'm sure you would agree ?

As the survivor of a fatal crash caused by someone else but in which I was trapped next to my dead best friend I can only dread what lies ahead for the poor mum.
Even nearly 30 years on I think about it on an almost daily basis, I spent years blaming myself, asking so many “what ifs” and “why him” questions, but to have your own kids die will be unthinkable and now as a parent myself I genuinely wonder if i would rather have died too, it’s so hard to comprehend how to begin to recover regardless of anything the courts and police can do...........
