A tastedul 4.2 litres in Audi A8 form... under thread budget, not the most striking colour.

A handsome 5.0 litres in SEL form... under thread budget, terrifying chrome sills likely hiding an iron oxide Armageddon.

A delightful 6.8 litres in Silver Spririt form... busts the budget, but a vintage interior made from actual caramel.
I still dream of dailying a Bentley or RR of that vintage. I came very, very close before buying my 8 series.

Love this!

Any beards know if this is the ZF playdoh gearbox?
I once lost a D2 S8 because of a gearbox with the breaking strain of a KitKat.

My search for an L322 is waning. Mainly because all I seem to be seeing are duff. What are elderly disco's like? I can see they're slow. Probably rattly. Rusty too? £2295 seems reasonable if this one is not gold underneath the photos.

Does a P38 not appeal? The L322's I've looked at at thread budget seem to be more rotten than the same priced or lower P38's
Two sold at the H and H auction in Buxton last week the green one for £1.5k+ and the blue one at £3k+ both look good.

If you buy a p38 over a L322 you need shot.

There is nothing better about them other than price.

I bought a L322 back in 2014 for within thread budget. It’s over 180k miles now and still chugging along in my mums boyfriends ownership. She owns a tdv8 L322 and I have had 2 of them in my past.

Just did a swap for another L322 which I am looking forward to sorting once I fly home. Fantastic cars even if they have rust or small issues they are still much nicer.

I like that a lot. Good find.
Soon to be seen with a white background, multiple open door shots, and a few grand added to the screen?

The 508 looks sort of OK

I occasionally drive a 308 and it's grim to drive - every last essence of driving pleasure engineered out of it, terrible ergonomics, a really poor gearchange
I think that's an absolutely stunning car. Genuinely one of the best-styled cars on sale.

If only it was XE-shaped or Giulia-shaped underneath then I'd really be a-hankering.
Having had a quick drive of a friend's 308 GTI the other day, I know PSA can still make a great car... You've just got to hope the good ones were let loose on that.
A concept I know, but I think this shows they've still got it in them to put out something special.

While they're capable of designing this sort of thing (and it'd be the first Pug since the 406 Coupe that I really would like) they just don't have the space hoppers to actually put it into production, let alone as is was initially designed sadly.

Having read your RR thread, I'd suggest your journey from £800 S430 via Boxster to L322 at no extra cost, is, err, unusual. Or, if I were 12, "jammy"! Still, I'm looking at cars from afar, and will probably find an L322 that's not totally sheddy eventually (or if it is, it's priced commensurately).

Interesting there are no disco comments. Are they that bad!?

No idea. I know we had this at the same price either at the end of last or very start of this thread, so you'd hope to see some price movement.

It has the same ZF 6HP26-A61 transmission used by many manufacturers however Audi stupidly claimed it was 'sealed for life' and never needed a fluid change. Find one that has had its fluid changed and it should be trouble free - as a precautionary measure I had it changed in mine soon after purchase at around 65,000 miles, no problems since <touches wood>

As Riley Blue says - it's the 6 speed gearbox which is much, much more reliable than the 5 speed that predates it. It has its issues but, as far as I'm aware, is rarely catastrophic and throwing a £2k+ bill like the old ones could. I had the same 'box in my E65, I changed the fluid and, whist the sump was off, had some other worn bits changed out of precaution which came to about £700 or so I think.

I think the E39 540i’s are probably one of the best sleeper cars, especially in SE spec

^ Thanks for the info above, chaps ^

The pics in the ad suggest that someone has spent a fair whack on the A8 fairly recently, including a gearbox service.

Last service didn't look that great.... not sure if any of the work was carried out.

Two schools of thought on that gorgeous A8.

1. Someone has spent loads on it recently so the next owner can just enjoy it.

2. It will continue to throw extremely expensive bills at the new owner.

Which do we subscribe to?

Based upon the post directly above yours, I'm inclined to say the 2nd school of thought hehe Unless those jobs have been done, of course.

Kind of, back in the day, but these days they aren't all that fast in the grand scheme of things. 286bhp is quick, but it's not THAT quick. Because of more modern gearbox tech they are no quicker than many lesser powered cars these days. Something like a new but debadged 550i would make a pretty good sleeper I think.

The only big issue I've had with mine was a freak incident when a torrential rain storm poured off my garage roof, over the bonnet, into the plenum chamber and drowned the electrics in the passenger footwell. Unfortunately it was beyond my local Audi independent to fix so cost far more than was sensible but emotional attachment to the car (it was bought with money my Dad left me) meant I still have it and it's running perfectly.

I think the E39 does qualify - most people these days would expect it to be driven fairly sedately, possibly with a flat cap and a box of tissues on the parcel shelf. Disappearing off in a V8 rumble at a decent rate would definitely raise an eyebrow or two.
