Opinions a few pages ago re what we threadists will all be driving in future volumes prompted me to look for petrol w211s for sale locally. I do like the look of the 211’s interior, especially if one could be found in a lighter hue.

How many for sale within 50 miles?

Guess.

Congrats on 10,000 !!!

And I said to myself: "Of course he can have some leeway on budget by way of celebration..."

Then I clicked on the ad itself and looked at the price! Talk about taking 'king liberties!

laughlaughlaugh
The price is very scary but the steering wheel is frankly terrifying: it's like some insect proboscis thingy coming out of the engine bay to suck at your guts!

Euromillions tickets bought.

I do love the two fingers up to the establishment feel about these, "this is what I am and you'll just have to get used to it" vibe. Just soooo cool.

Extra bonus points that it lives in a place called Fawkham.

It's not even a genuine 325I....some cobbled together thing, from 30+ year old 318!

If you don't buy it today, could be £13k tomorrow?
Even if I'd been off my meds for a week and imagined in my wildest fantasies that this pile of utter fail was some kind of must-have-it bargain, I'd still refuse to engage in any buying negotiations with the person who penned that advert.
Embarrassing, if I'm being generous.

"The car has been professionally valued at £12k so you know where it needs to be."

Yes, I do...

Very nice. I've been pouring over listings for CLS' for about 6 months now with a serious eye on picking one up when insurance is due for renewal (4 weeks and counting).
Key options for me are heated seats, the Harmon Kardon system and the updated 5.5L V8 which puts me right at the top end of thread budget for one with plenty of miles under its belt.

I keep getting budget creep though and ending up looking at W211 E63 AMGs trying to convice myself I can make the man maths work.
I posted one earlier which might be for you. Not sure there is any HK stereo but everything else you want is there, including a full MBSH.
Anyway, what's more important, the right engine, or the right stereo? wink

I'd absolutely love one of these, but they're crazy money. And the cheap ones on AT and Fleabay sound dodgy as fk! frown

There are alternatives outside of the usual suspects. My parents have a Mazda Bongo, and it happens to have a fairly decent V6 petrol installed. I'm sure you could get one within thread budget.
I did try and buy a Sherpa identical to this a couple years back but the seller was very weird and it didn't happen. Possibly a blessing smile

You madman. Did you drive it first?? laugh

I have some dreadful memories of late-night travel in the Sherpa's descendant, the LDV Convoy (band transport). Being in it was bad enough, the thought of driving the wretched thing was an ordeal that (fortunately) I never had to suffer.
I had an ex-Post Office hi-top Sherpa (D-reg, so don't now recall if it was a Sherpa or a LDV) that a mate and I 'converted' to a camper van and drove around Europe as 18 year olds in the summer of 1992. I recall it went quite well. Twin rear wheels, so presumably it must have been a 3.5-tonner. Best feature was the sliding driver's door, great view on Pyrenean passes. Was going fine until sudden and terminal gearbox failure on the autostrada near Naples. AA 5 Star breakdown cover (my mate's dad's prescient contribution to the trip) put us up in a hotel for a couple of nights, then paid for luggage, a train to Rome, taxis and business class BA flights home before bringing the van back a few weeks later! Happy days!

Congrats - it's a nice ( and rare) car. It was advertised at 10k at about 35k miles at MTSV if I remember correctly.

So kind of them to even let people bid on it at all!

I understand classic cars, but classic campers I just do not get.

It must be painful actually using them.
Me neither. I've done a fair bit of rough sleeping or minimalist camping and if I go away in now I like to stay in hard cover with proper beds, running hot water and a proper toilet. If you are mentally prepared and have the minimum amount of kit rough sleeping or minimalist camping isn't that bad for a limited time. Camper vans seem like a hallway house between them where I think I'd be truly miserable and the cost could buy a fair few nights in a decent hotel of holiday let.

Plus due to the conversion you cant really load a camper full of DIY materials and skip run stuff.

No apologies needed. (And I bet my wife is quietly thanking you that I didn't bid).

Congratulations. You did well there and glad that it's come to the thread!

Apologies not entirely barge related but won't get many answers in the Camping forum.

Anybody live in/near Camarthen ?

There's 2 campervans for sale (one in the next village) but it's a 9 hour round trip for me.
That is the true essence of this thread! Reaching-out (sorry) to unknown losers about random st, confident in the knowledge that you're likely to get help from a decent sort. Good luck. I'm getting more interested in campers myself actually.
I'm not all that up on modern parlance.....
Is "getting into campers" code for d0gging or being very interested in glass topped coffee tables?
Probably.

Anyway, I'm from Carmarthen but live an hour east now.

The rise of diesels eh? Yes to the torque of a large engined TD. Matched to a good auto it might not be so bad.

And yes, the red interior is marvellous!
To be honest that's the best and most realistic car I've seen over the last four days of intensive internet trawling!

( And i'd already said that early this morning before I knew it was a thread member's )

Correct Harry. NIL! Not even a solitary, miserable 1.8 four-pot. Is NI a bit different from the rest of the UK in veering even more than normal towards miserable frugality? Influence of Ulster-Scots Presbyterianism perhaps?
We may enjoy the smoothness of an lovely in-line 6 or the grunt of a V8 but we know it’s a sin and we’ll pay for it later somehow, so let’s just get that 2.0 diesel like everyone else, sure if it doesn’t save our souls then at least it’ll save a couple of hundred £ a year in fuel, so that’s a blessin!

ETA: I’m supping Jawbox gin on The Lord’s Day, so I’m going to Hell regardless, might as well get there in a petrol in-line 6.
