The level of technology and integrity and sheer, bloody, rational thought in an LS400 makes it a strong contender for Best Car of All Time.

It might be boring, but it's a boring spaceship.
Akin these days to Hyundai coming up with more advanced, refined and better built equivalent to a current S class. And asking almost half the money.

Actually, that may not sound too inconceivable...

Have we had this LS460 for £1 change out of top thread budget:

Cripes!

Like!
Blimey! That's stonking.
It is indeed.

Whilst it is probably an advance on the 400 and 430 in many ways, the loss of a cassette player does it no favours amongst the more traditionally-minded of us. Perhaps less tragically, the rear view has les of a unique Lexus and more of a Camry-esque look to me.

I must admit the 460 is much more to my liking than the 400 (dull) and 430 (gopping). Each to their own, however, the 400 is pretty classless. If it is tidy you could turn up most places and it wouldn't look too out of place. That said, comparing to a 140 as per earlier....the 140, IMO, has it licked in that department.

£10k will get you a well sorted W211 E55 - easy to look after by modern standards, very robust powertrain, strong performance. In fact, any of that era of 55 Mercs probably fit into that budget.

As an E55 owner, I’d say that is factually accurate, but likely of no use to the prospective purchaser, who doesn’t seem to really want any of the sage advice or opinion from the thread beards and others! I do hope that you take the plunge with something, Integroo, and share the story! Good luck.

I'm so very offended laugh

I have been offered an SLK55 by someone in thread which is very tempting but it is so very far away ...

They're the best. All cars are worth starting to bond with on a road trip. One way rail or plane ticket, a debit card, charged phone, recovery membership number to hand and a passenger-seat full of unhealthy comestibles. Perfect.

This. No better way to while away the hours, nervously listening for unusual mechanical noises, trying to work out where the wiper switches are only after it begins to pour down and fixating on the temperature gauge.

Its very difficult to fit a flight to Glasgow and a drive home to London in the same day, especially every time you suggest it to your better half (who is insistent you do not need a car) you get told of some plan that I have forgotten (her parents visiting, her sister visiting, some show we are going to see ... etc.).

Only in this thread could a standard cd player instead of a cassette one be seen as a negative point.

You must try harder: the NI branch of the thread fly from Norn Iron and get back the same day. Well at least I do. Last time I left Chiswick at 17.30, reached Cairnryan at 3am and was home for 6.30am!

Cor, isn't it just!

Not convinced about sat nav in the back, indicative of drivers with giraffe necks? Can't see Gerald being one of those "laid back" drivers with one hand on the wheel... Or is it for when Tarquin asks "are we nearly there yet?" Gerald can say "you've got it on shortest again haven't you?"
