Totally off topic... But we frequently discuss colours in this thread. Many cars these days are boring..... White, black, silver or grey. I have just seen photos of the new BMW M8 in one called Ametrine metallic. I think it's wonderful! Like a dark purple, similar to the old Mora metallic they did.

Lovely colour, hideous vehicle.
^ That. 4 door 8 series?
Yep. It's not a sporty coupe any more unless there's a 4 door version, a 5 door GT and an SUV version too. I know, befuddled too. Want a 4 door E31? Buy an E32.

Nice colour.

I feel like we ought to use the shakes-fist-at-clouds meme for the BMW and Merc fans that bemoan the plethora of variants or the cheapening of the erstwhile sporty badge. If they make money for the manufacturers and eventually filter down to we bottom-feeders with interesting engines and in interesting colours, why get frustrated about it?

I rather like this. Unlikely to be in our meagre budget, admittedly.

Fixed the link, for the benefit of R129SL and all of us streaming the frenzied bidding live on Facebook laugh

I'm quite smitten by the R129 SL600

The fervent prayer of bargists everywhere is that other people keep buying silly spec new cars for our later use.

Agree. I don't see the harm in having more choice?

You say "want a 4 door 8 series, get a 7 series"... Well.... I prefer the styling of the 8 over the 7.....so if I were in the market, I'd choose the 8 over the 7. Someone else may prefer the other. What is wrong with having choice?

I quite fancy the Supra, but then I remember how bad the engine is for blowing head gaskets, and the fact that if you had to brake at >90 it’d kick the back end out randomly, and the rust. But I still also remember it’s the 1st car I did 150 in (and a little bit more if the headlights were down!) The MOT history screams rust too. So maybe not. I also like the idea of a GTA, but not that one.

For me, it’d be the 944S2 (looks reasonable), the CX, and maybe - as there’s no real data yet, the E500. (If I’m going to spend most of my time working abroad, might as well buy lhd).

Still only tentative on the loser-meet though. I’d hoped to be finished for the year by now, but still stuff dragging on.

When the actual quality and long-term/high mileage durability of the thing goes South to pay for it.

Shorts and trousers are fine. 3/4 length cargo pants are where choices like that get you...

laugh I'm not sure I agree with you but I love the analogy. (Or is it metaphor? We had this lesson a few pages back but I've had a sleep since then so the brain re-sets.)

Hand on heart, do you think that if they made fewer models, the build quality would genuinely go up? Baring in mind they all share the same mechanicals, just different bodies. The bodies rarely go wrong.

I don’t think build quality is poor (although longevity is less a feature, but that’s the world of today) and I don’t object to niche filling. What gets me is why everything has to be burdened with faux-sporting pretensions and a sneering appearance, and the restrictions on picking and choosing individual options. The fact that the latest 1 series advert seems to major with unlocking the car with a smart phone, and most adverts stress connectivity above all else, very much suggests the battle is lost!

What MPG do you get cruising the motorway at say 70mph?
very little of that in my daily driving! smile most of it is country lanes and city and my average is 18mpg..
Is that for the V12? If so, that's really not too bad at all!
Oh, you mean me?

It's supposed to do about 20mpg on the official Japanese figures. I've not worked it out properly yet as I've chucked fifty quid into it a few times but not made a note of the odo. Doing a run down to Pembrokeshire soon, so will do a proper fuel consumption calc.

In other news, I'm quite sad and annoyed with myself, I've managed to scrape the lower brightwork on the rear nearside three quarter panel on a low wall. The car was bloody perfect and now I've gone and spoilt it cry

Whilst I totally agree with everything you're saying, the advert is kind of a moot point. They're advertising to what the market want. I had this conversation with someone about a mobile phone advert a while ago.... They commented how the advert was basically about thr camera, not the fact it was a phone. I simply replied that, being a phone, you already know it can make calls and send texts.... So they're advertising the other bits people are interested in. Same sort of thing with the car I think. Maybe?
