A little remap and high octane fuel can take these up to ridiculous levels of performance.

I'll never understand how the M2 sounds so much better than the M3, considering how they both have such similar engines. M2 always sounded like the old 1M coupe (sharing the same engine too), compared to the M3 which sounds like a very raspy car in comparison. I do appreciate the power of the M3 however, they seem like absolute weapons on any road.

I can only surmise that those who thing there is no real difference between the M3 and the standard 3-series have never driven both? The two are very different. Both very good cars, but both very different.

I drove both the Manual and Auto when I was looking to buy, and expected to add to 12 years of BMW ownership with the M3. The manual was very disappointing. You would have to really value the manual stick/shifting gogs to put up with it's failings. The DCT box wasn't great, and I can't help thinking a shift to a ZF box with the same level of aggressive tune as the M5 will be a far superior option.
I have driven the new M5 Competition and the gearbox is too smooth for my liking. Also at speed the shift seem artificial. The ZF is better at driving around town though.
Sorry, but nothing better than a DCT when moving at speed.
Even in its most aggressive setting? I don't rate it quite as high as the tune in the QF, but I thought it easily a match in manual operation with the Getting DCT. And I guess the chameleonic nature is part of the pull for me...and what left just slightly out of love with the M3.

Love my F80 M3 CP.

So much fun and i love its lairy character. It's a sizeable car though - dimensions are very similar to an E39 M5

IIRC the 1M engine is the older N54 twin turbo design. The M2 and M3/4 engines are both based on the later N55 (single turbo, twin scroll and open deck in the M2, twin turbo and closed deck in the M3/4). The M2 Competition gets the same engine as the M3/4

I had a (yes, remapped) f30 335d and was always thought i could keep up with an M3/M4 in the real world.
It was a very fast, but boring to drive car but them i test drove a comp pack M3.
The way it drives is so far away from the 335d and the power is much more brutal when giving it some.
Ok, not as great in the wet but it still goes well and every journey is fun and something to look forward to.
Fits 3 kids in the back fine, decent boot and the comp pack makes a decent noise I find - much much better than than the Youtube videos show smile
Did a 300 mile round trip 5 up in it last week, boot full of luggage/suitcases with no problems at all.
It actually seems more roomier inside than the f30 335d.

That’s weird I thought the comp seats would eat up space for passengers in the back.

May I ask what your average consumption was?

Comp seats are quite slim - plus the kids can poke there feet thru the gaps for extra space smile
335d got around 34/35
M3 gets 23/24

Both cars mainly used around town though with little motorway work.

F80 is fine with two kids seats in the back (the M140 before it was very tight with 6 footer driving and child seat behind).

I found the 340i seats actually hugged you a tiny bit more than the M3 Comp seats, the bolsters came in a little more.I do wish they had the bottom bit that came out to your knees too.
