Given the general praise of the previous trophy r may I ask what was it that you didn't like? Genuine question.

This has absolutely nothing to do with "Dieppe" where the Alpine / R.S factory is as all Megane R.S. are now built in Palencia in Spain and have been since the Megane 3 in 2010.
I didnt know that

That's obviously the one to have, they've slammed it and gone for the rear wiper delete like a rusty Polo.

Not obvious at all. Different priorities etc. The ring needs travel and quite a relatively soft set up so not sure the apparent "slam" is not just down to the amount of tension the driver is putting through the chassis.

Wow. Really surprised at the level of hate for a driver focussed car on a car enthusiast forum.

I for one am very glad that Renault still puts the time and effort into making these and am sure it's worth their while even if it's just as an aspirational model that doesn't actually sell in large numbers.

The 280 has pushed the Megane RS into new territory and it's 5 door shell will have gained a lot of sales for real life usability. Yes, it's maybe not quite nailed like the mk3 was but I can't remember the 250 going straight to the top of the hot hatch pile when it was released.

Quite possibly the same market that bought the 30 275 Trophy Rs will take care of these. Afterall, their reason for buying is probably more than skin deep. I'm not really sure what coupe you could put this against with a similar ethos, ability and price bracket?!

CF wheels? Excellent, so you’ll need to remember to replace the near side front every time the missus takes it out....

Can’t remember the last time I saw any hot hatch with more than two people in it. Yes, having rear seats could be useful in certain circumstances, but then so is having a larger load area when there are no rear seats present

I believe they are carbon revolution wheels fitted to that car, if so this could be one serious machine cool
Also looks like some carbon ceramic brakes up front as well - if they are as dark as they look in that photo

Think people (like myself) would prefer to have the Trophy-R with a big more power, and more driver focus, while still keeping the practicality of having rear seats. By stripping it out and inserting a roll cage, you limit it's use. Yes, some won't mind as they get it, or it's a spur of the moment purchase for someone with enough disposable income to have the latest toy for 6 months.

But generally speaking, I think the reviews of the new Megane RS have been disappointing. When the new RS was announce I was very keen to buy one. Then the reviews came out and I changed my mind.

You really should drive one. They are superb.

A Trophy-R will be ace, look forward to seeing what they actually bring to market.

I genuinely can’t tell if this comment is ironic or just someone being really stupid.

This makes me very happy! I'm glad some companies still make these hardcore hot hatches. I don't get the hate Renault have built the normal trophy version to keep everyone happy.

Not ironic at all, don't see the point in a two seater hatchback and it seems many on here agree with me and that includes the paying punters. Renault have tried removing the seats on hatchbacks twice before and hardly managed to sell any.

Thanks for calling me stupid though, hope you feel better for getting that off your chest and glad to see you are living up to your username. wink

They made more of the R26R than they could sell - and my view is that was largely due to them releasing it in the middle of the financial crisis.

They only released (and sold) 30 Trophy Rs to the U.K.

The R26R is trading at more than people would have paid for the car, which if we’re focusing on sales, vindicates the product.

Rarity and novelty factor will always make a product a bit more desirable plus you will you will always find a handful of fans who will like the car enough that they won't car about the rear seats. For the rest of the 99% of the population it doesn't make sense. Don't get me wrong I love that they make nutty cars and I think the Clio V6 is a fantastic little thing but that has the engine in the back so no rear seats is pretty well justified and was designed to be a bonkers two seater super hatch from the start but I just don't get the idea of ripping out perfectly good seats from a car that already has them in. The loss of practicality and therefore huge reduction in it's potential market far outweighs the 60-70kg a decent lightweight rear bench would weigh IMO.

I always reference the BMW M3 CSL in this regard, it lost 110kgs but still retained the rear seats, if it hadn't I don't think it would have sold a fraction as many or reached such a lofty status as one of the best BMW's made. The GTS that followed it with the rear seats removed doesn't get half as much love or attention despite being a better, more hardcore drivers car.

Remember BMW struggled to shift the CSL when it was new despite having the rear seats in place, it's only later in life become an icon.
When my brother was picking up his E60 M5 it was the same price as a CSL at the same dealer, think it was £24-25k back then, well before the lofty heights of today.
