it Looks like it’s going to be even uglier than the last one with a ridiculous, oversized front grille based on images from an unveiling...

And to make matters worse, it looks like an X2 from behind...

Nothing so far is making me regret ordering an M140 o far.

Interesting.

I'll reserve judgement until I see the entire car. I've bought into the brand recently but am not 100% on the new design language. Hopefully it'll grow on me.

The Z4 M40i was very nice but the worse bit for me is the kidney grill. This one looks similar and a bit naff.

Wow. That front end is vile. The rear not quite so bad but still very bulky/bloated.

Reminds me of an MPV at the front. Thank god they dropped the interesting engine, now I won't have any reason to ever consider one.

Exactly. The F20 wasn’t the prettiest car but wasn’t too bad looking by the end and the looks were forgiven because of the engine. The grille in those pictures is horrendous.

Presumably then, the new 1 series will be cheaper as its platform sharing now.

... yeah, fat chance.

How much cheaper do you want, when you can get £9k discount without even trying wink

BMW are notorious for huge discounts and I've no doubt this one will be any different.

Literally LOL at those images if true. Will wait for an official announcement but I reckon Audi or Merc have snuck in a double agent on the design team because no one would draw that and say yes I'm happy with that look. Jesus fking Christ that is truly vile in a Ssangyong Rodius sort of way lol.

That doesn't look at all bad IMO, especially the rear.

I don't mind the looks.
I don't mind the 2.0 engine.
I don't mind the faux 4wd.

Judging by the comments no one else will buy one so they will be giving them away, yet I actually believe they will sell them by the bucket load.

Funny that. New BMW in 'hated by people that don't buy them' shock. wink

12 months they will be everywhere, I would consider one but would need to drive it before I decide, I am a bit funny like that...

Be interesting to see what deals they do, quite a lot of competition in the hot hatch market these days.

That’s doesn’t surprise me, but both the current X1 and X2 are relatively new models.

And all BMWs. And all in the same broader segment.

The surprise would be a manufacturer not have a constant design approach.

I think RWD is a bit overrated to be honest, as is having six or more cylinders.

Its all about a car as a package and whether you enjoy it and to be honest I want to make my own mind up rather than just adopt the conceived wisdom.
For me, personally, those two attributes sold the car, and the loss of them reduces the choice in the market. There's already a vast choice of very good four pot 300 ish bhp FWD and AWD stuff out there.

I drove an S3, Golf R, Focus ST and the M140i, and went for the M140i. The Audi and Golf were nicer inside, and more capable in anything other than dry conditions, and the Focus was more involving. But the engine in the 140i is in a different league to all of them, not so much performance wise as the creamy smooth way it delivers power, and the sheer tractability of it. Oh, and the lovely noise it makes. Some of it is artificial, but a lot of it isn't. It sounds fantastic through a tunnel, for example.

And the RWD gives a great feel to the car out of corners, even without 'dab of oppo' / driving God heroics.

Even my mother, who has no interest whatsoever in cars, commented how smooth the engine was and how good it sounded as soon as she got in the car for the first time. She wouldn't know or care that it was down to a six cylinder engine, but she noticed the result.

I like the 2.0 turbo B48 engine, having thoroughly enjoyed it in a Cooper S Works 210 that I had on loan. I suspect the new car will be very capable, and I fully intend to have a go in one with an open mind. But the old engine and the drivetrain layout were the real selling points of the M140i for me, and I liked the fact that the car was something a little different to the rest as a result of it. Better or worse is a personal view, but it was different. Maybe (hopefully) the new car will have such a cracking chassis that we wouldn't care if it were powered by a steam engine. smile

...and if not there is the M240 to pick up the pieces. Once the 2-series gets revised, I'll bet you a large bag of Quavers that this shift in the line-up will add choices, not remove them.

Same here. I have owned an M135i and currently run an M140i, but the next gen 1 series leaves me cold. Once you go AWD and 4 cylinder, there is an awful lot of competion out there, and the BMW shortcomings I can overlook due to the drivetrain will come sharply into focus.

At this stage I have no idea what to do for my next car. Maybe the M140i for a bit longer, as I can't see any like for like replacement.

Alternatively I can go for the less practical option and pick up an M2 (or M240i). More realistically, maybe a 440i Gran Coupe or M340i if it has a decent rear biased AWD.
