RE: Renault Megane 300 Trophy vs. VW Golf GTI TCR
Discussion
I remember when the press were waxing lyrical about the R19 16v when pitched against the mk2 golf 16v. It’s been the same ever since that the Renault is the best drivers car and the Golf the best ownership proposition. Some things never change. Whereas mk2 16vs now fetch strong money, whens the last time anyone saw a R19?

If you just want a quick car that can do everything, the Golf GTI is one of the best, no doubt about it. It does everything. But an M140i can also do everything, and with the GTI now being the same price and BMW doing much better discounts, the M140i is surely the better pick.
If you want a razor sharp hatch with character, spend half the money and get the old megane, remap it and enjoy.
Have to admit though, these mediocre reviews of the new Megane's are confusing. Any actual owners i've seen talking about them have all been raving about the new car.

Great engine, playful and can sing but you need 3 lagers to convince yourself.
Both great cars.
I went i30N (or the wife did, anyway) - 12 months old, 4 year warranty remaining, 12k miles - £21,999.
Hilarious fun, and fully loaded - apple play, part leather, memory seats etc - much of which were optional extra on my Golf - for one set price.
Not the last word in performance - and probably a bit heavy - but hilarious fun and sounds like a monster.

Sounds like a lot for a used Hyundai......I went i30N (or the wife did, anyway) - 12 months old, 4 year warranty remaining, 12k miles - £21,999.

Anyway, Megane all day, sounds like a confused, interesting beast that will be right up my street.

Both cars have appeal, but the engine bay in the Renault Looks like they've just thrown a load of wire and pipe at it and hoped for the best
In other words it looks like, well, an engine. You think the golf looks any better without the cover? It's not as if it's a V8 and worth staring at.................Just back from doing the NC500 in my Golf clubsport. First thing I did was ditch the Bridgestone tyres and replaced with Michelin PS4S and it totally transformed the car.
Did the NC500 in my 991 last year and found the clubsport more enjoyable with incredible feel even in the challenging weather conditions. That's the beauty of a sorted hot hatch.
I did price a Golf TCR on the configurator to £41K so even justified the used price I paid for a 2 year old clubsport!

You rang a stranger’s doorbell to ask about his orange Renault!
Comedy fking gold!
Please, please tell me you’re a grown man too!!
haha yes I am a grown up but that guy lost the child in himself, really couldn't handle a stranger at the door... if he only knew that this strange guy at his door happens to own some cars he might like to see and talk about in that strange guy's garage, only a few hundred meters up the road.... Comedy fking gold!

The new Mégane really is a looker!
So much more so in the flesh! I'd urge any on the fence to view one in person.
I do agree they are diluting the RS badge a little these days which is sad but the way of the world these days! (New m135i 4 cylinders 30bhp less and 4wd for example)
A hard core trophy r version on its way tho...

Both good cars. In fact I think all the current crop of hot hatches are good cars and it's virtually impossible to say one is better than another, just one is more suited to an individual's wants and needs.
My choice, the 308 GTi. Often over-looked, subtle and rare. Most of the time very simple and straightforward to drive, but take it to its limits and it is probably the most entertaining of the current crop. Plus its got the biggest boot and is the most economical (so what I hear many of you say - but then you've missed the point of these cars. A good hot hatch should double as a family car and a fun car to drive. If you don't need the family bit, get a sports car)
I quite fancy the new I30N fastback, but I don't think any hot hatch appeals enough to warrant a change. Lets see what the next generation Focus and Golf brings to the party!

If the nunbers are right the manual Renault is 100kgr heavier than the double-clutch golf. So if both were manual the difference would be 150+ kgr.
But they are not. After looking up some real numbers, the like for like difference is in the region of 30-50kg depending on equipment. The Renault has the revoknucle and the rws that add weight, so end of the day they are quite similar weight. But the Mégane is both the longer and wider car, so it's actually quite good considering that MQB platform cars tend to be top of the class for lowish weight... Supersaloons said:
