Basically any SUV built by a company famous for its sporting and GT cars (like the Bentley, Lamborghini, Maserati, et al).

The opposite also holds true: Range Rover making the stty little Evoque and then chopping the roof off to make a pram. Ditto the Mini pram.

And Ford generally for nicking the iconic radiator grille from the Aston Martin and whacking it onto the Focus and Mundaneohs.

Oh really? I rented a new ("old") Transit back in 2013 and was shocked how horrible it was. It made me have a bit more sympathy for "white van man" and understand why they often drive the way that they do i.e. get to where they need to go as quickly as possible so that they don't have to sit in the uncomfortable seats/listen to the horrible racket of the diesel any longer! I would have hoped that the new one would have been decent.

I don't know what you guys expect, it is first and foremost a comercial vehicle, not a S-Class...

I have regulary driven the previous gen, pre facelift Custom and now have a 19 Plate Custom. Yes the diesel engine is noisy, it is not just standard to the Transit though. DAB radio, cruise, auto wipers/lights, PDC all round, ect. I do 30k a year in ours.

This Transit was a 2018 Custom with a whopping 10'000 miles. Had a weird whilsting/farting noise under boost and idled erratically. I found it bloody uncomfortable to drive and the sharp edge to the map pocket under the drivers seat sliced my thumb open. Typical nasty Ford key and Ford locks (you can still open it up with Mole grips) plus today, an AA patrolman was telling me how crap they are from running problems, the engine refusing to even crank over when AdBlue runs out requiring a Ford dealer reset, to door hinges breaking, minor stuff....
He's got a 3 year old VW T5 with over 100k and no problems.

I've always thought of Transits as cheap disposable crap and this one follows the trend. The current ones aren't rotting to bits, yet! laugh

My last Custom had 130,000 over miles, ran/looked like new. You must have been unlucky... I am suprised the door lock issue hasn't been fixed though!

Well, Ford did own Aston a few years back, the Focus was designed by a team under Design Director in North America Moray Callum at Ford.

Moray Callum is the younger brother of Ian Callum who designed he DB9 when ASTON was owned by Ford.

Perhaps Ford still have the rights to the front grill design and Aston have to pay a small stipend for the licensing.

Hence Aston have never tried to take Ford to court because they don't own the rights to the design?

The grille design dates back to at least the 1950s.
Copy or no copy, it couldn’t elevate the Fords it appeared on.

This is an interesting comparison because, to me, it's the other way around.

The MG Z-cars were absolutely in keeping with the heritage of the MG marque going all the way back to the 1920s - take a relatively uninspiring ordinary mass-production car (be it a Morris or a Rover), do a really good job of upgrading the suspension, steering and brakes so it drives really nicely and sprinkle the bodywork with enough vaguely sporting garnish to make it visually distinct (but by no means completely different) from the humdrum car that spawned it. That was MG's stock in trade for decades. If anything the bespoke sports cars (as lovely as they are) are the abberations, but even they used mass-produced running gear.

The Z-cars offered cars that were genuinely good to drive (not perfect by any means, but much, much better than their image or origins might suggest) at a very reasonable price, which has been MG's mission statement since 1925.

The RV8, on the other hand, was a rather cynical marketing move to keep MG in the public eye between the end of the M-cars and the birth of the MGF and to squeeze some foreign currency out of octagon-crazy Anglophiles in Japan. It was a twee, deliberately retro (more like deliberately backward) lash-up of BMH body panels and bits of Range Rover and Rover Metro. It was in no way supposed to be a proper sports car (like the even more technologically ancient but more focussed Morgan Plus 8 or the TVR Griffith, or even the modern MGB evocations like the Frontline LE50), just a pandering PR exercise for people who couldn't get over the fact that the MGB had gone, and that there was more to the MG marque than the MGB.

MG had made outdated cars before (MGB and the T-type Midget) but that was forced on them by neccessity because the money wasn't around to update them and the cars themselves were still selling profitably. MG at heart was never deliberately conservative. If Abingdon had had its way the 'B would have been replaced in the early 1970s with a mid-engined, Hydragas-sprung Stratos-lookalike. But the RV8 was exactly that - a wheeled eight-cylinder National Trust wall calendar called "Summers of a Bygone Age".

I'm fairly sure all SS Allegro's were 1750s.

The Allegro suffered because it was a plump 1100 which, at one time, was a UK best seller, thanks to Italianish styling and sharp handling. The Allegro was heavier and taller and the gear change was rubbish. It looked dumpy so people bought Escorts and Vivas. It never even had a hatch, in common with others.

Sadly, though soluble, the Alfasud was a masterclass in what the Allegro never was and the Golf a lesson in how a hatch could define the market.

Haha! Love that. And yes I totally agree an X Type is a UKIPpy car. Can we associate other cars with political parties? Perhaps a thread in its own right. The Allegro that has appeared prominently in this threat is very Corbyn in every possible way.

Theresa May is a Porshce Boxter, you can't really tell which end is which.

I like the X Type and very few owners I have met have ever had a bad word for them. They look just as God, if not better than their contemporary 3 series.
