RE: Diesel replaces V8 in new Audi S6 and S7

The "S" models have almost become a trim level tbh. I've not see one in years. Mainly replaced by farting RS3s.
In the grand scheme of things, it probably makes sense. The PCP gang only want it for the look, not the performance. So improving the monthly "affordability" might work in the favour of the "S" cars.

Look at the rise of the S4 numbers since the current model came out. Coincidentally the first S4 to be had on decent PCH deals.

The people renting cars they cannot afford to buy of course. I tried to make the argument earlier that after the monthlies they cannot afford petrol or food but I was mocked! Edited by wormus on Tuesday 16th April 17:39
PCP is buying a car not renting it.
But buying, renting, whatever, the cost of "ownership" is similar. PCP tends to cost a bit more than depreciation but you might get some of that back when you swap. A good PCH deal will be a bit less than depreciation. Owning outright the cost is the depreciation. All very similar figures.
So how is the person with the money in the bank itching to blow it on a car any more entitled than the other situations given they are all paying for the car one way or another? Arguably there is a case for saying the person who has spent the cash is more likely to be starving and not buying fuel, as they won't have been checked for affordability like the situations involving credit checks. Just because they can buy it outright it doesn't mean they should do or that they can really afford to.
S4 and S5 to be diesel in Europe too same engine as the S6 S7

Well at least it isn't an RS5 like the prototype from 5 years ago. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/audi/rs5/firs...
I do think peeps are underestimating how interesting a drive these could be, just because they are diesel. Used to have a 270hp diesel 1-series track car, it was a good drive...

Well no wonder.

Not really, it’s designed for low monthly, affordable payments with a large balloon payment at the end which most people never clear and therefore never own the car. Also, the car belongs to the finance company until the final payment is made, unlike a bank loan where the car is yours. PCP is buying a car not renting it.
Anyway, I stick to my original point which is Audi are broadening the appeal of the car by putting in a more economical engine to make it more affordable to most of the people who’ll drive one: renters/PCPers or what ever you want to call them.

Yes it is financing it, but it is buying it and owning it (including getting the V5 which doesn't happen with hire) with the car as security against a finance package. In the same way that buying a house on a mortgage is still buying a house even though the mortgage company can take it off you if you don't pay. Some people take out a loan to pay the balloon on their cars by the way.DMG34 said:
Exactly, makes it an even stranger now they didn’t put the V8 TDI into the S6/7.
S4/5 TDI should be pretty good.
makes more sense in the s5, which has already had around 350bhp whereas the s6 (which are mostly ordered as estates) are super heavy and easily the worst choice.S4/5 TDI should be pretty good.
still think that they're not proper s cars though.

This old chestnut. Some can afford the price and enjoy the experience. If you’ve got kids you won’t drive 100 miles without a wee stop so refuelling is moot
Actually, it isn't. I've just got back from a weekend in Edinburgh. In my 640d I could do the whole return journey, plus driving around, on comfortably less than a tankful.
In the Alfa, I had to refuel in Edinburgh, and suffer the arse of finding a SUL retailer, or refuel on the motorway and pay £10 more for the privilege.
As a once or twice a quarter trip, it didn't irk me too much, the the enjoyment of the car soon counters the pain....but if I was doing that once or twice a week, it soon would soon bother me more.
Ditto, doing a r3500 mile European oad trip last summer, finding fuel stations became intrusive in the Alfa. Was never so in the BMW.
Range is important to a lot of people.
