I don't trust anything that Audi do that involves wiring and electricity, so simply on the basis that this is Audi, there is potentially so much to go wrong with this technology and huge scope for hugely costly repairs.

I've got a feeling the product planners were looking at all the 3.0 TDI lumps coming off the assembly line that Porsche doesn't want anymore and though 'You know what? We'll bolt some electrickery to them and put them in the next S6/7"... wink

Just a reflection of the market place, 99% of buyers do not care what the engine is, they dwaddle about oblivious to what's about them but never go over the speed limit

Its a shiny audi with an S6 badge and that's all that matters in next door neighbour one up man ship

the problem is those estates are so heavy, if they weigh similar to the last then the new S6 Avant will come out at 178bhp/ton so roughly about 20bhp/tonne down on a fiesta st with a mountune pack or something similar

V8 -> V10 -> Twin Turbo V8 -> "twin charge" V6 diesel

Makes similar power as the SQ5 and S4/S5, which are one rung down the Audi ladder.

The upcoming RS6 is said to produce 650hp, 300 more!!!

This doesn't make any sense

Edited by matrignano on Thursday 11th April 12:09
It is a big gap to the forthcoming RS6 isn't it, and 100hp down on the old S6 but looking at the German pricing similar money? I think it would appeal to more people in diesel form but only if the price reflects the loss of 100hp and that TTV8 as before.

Not a fan of this decision, would be nice if Audi can explain why?

I'm staggered that even a company/group as crap as VAG are still prepared to push disiesals into the world. Unbelievable!

King Canute kind of action by Audi - struggling to understand why they are doing this
Canute the Great did not try to stop the tide, just pointed out he couldn't because he was not God.

Although do agree with what you are trying to say. Seems a very weird move.

Expect more diesel hybrids as Manufacturers have to meet the new C02 limits that the EU have decreed so this is the way it'll be.

Actually, I get this move.

The S6 was sat in no-mans land. A poor man's RS6 or a badge engineered A6. The 'S' used to be the top model, then RS hit every live-up leaving the S sat in the wilderness. BMW compete in this sector with a 'standard' 5-series 550i/d (although not in the UK), AMG get berated for calling the warm model an AMG, this new breed of 'S' makes it a more touring/comfort high performance options for the owners/drivers, the bulk of which will be higher-mileage management than can't justify the miles in an RS.

This actually makes sense.

and 300bhp/tonne down on a bike.
But not a competitor to either?

Anyone after a big fairly quick Audi will be more than happy with the new S6..it will be plenty fast enough and cheaper to run than the old one.The v8 S6 is fabulous but was not a huge seller....as much as we don't like it on here, it makes sense for Audi. A nice 2016 s6 would be on my list next....keep it a few years and hopefully not lose much money......

Because they're launching a high (ish) powered diesel?

1994 s6
230hp 1780kg
129 bhp/ton

1999 s6
335hp 1825kg
183 bhp/ton

2006 s6
430 1970kg
218 bhp/ton

2012 s6
420hp 1950kg
215 bhp/ton

2017 s6
450hp 1950kg
230 bhp/ton

this puts the new Audi S6 pre 1999 in terms of its bhp/ton, it's a step back in this sense.

I'd also argue that the S6 has always been above hot fiestas etc in terms of speed and potential owners expect this level of relative performance.

This is how it works around here. Most people do:

40mph on 30mph roads and complain when they get done for it.
45mph on national speed limit roads and complain when they get overtaken.

I'm convinced that most drivers don't know what the national speed limit sign means.

Having been in 3.0 TDI/dsg with quattro drive train equipped car for the first time today. As a day to day choice it's hard to fault, noise and chassis not part of judging. Impeccibly smooth, a gentle thrum and a sensation of thrust. I'm a fan. Then again I don't have a downer on diesel per se.

Yes....they are changing where is sits in the model line up. It's been in no-mans land since the RS6 came along.
