Whether it's considered unsafe or not, be careful wearing headphones/earphones driving - Police can take you to the cleaners for not paying due care and attention if they feel like it.

4.6s to 60 is all show and no go? Christ is your daily an SR-71?

And there in lies my point; the Golf was louder than the EV (as all ICE cars will be), but was slower. Therefore, the Golf was all show and no go.
This only applies if your idea of 'Go' is purely the speed/acceleration of a car. I'm probably right in saying that most true car enthusiasts will value the enjoyment they get from driving a car much more than how quick it is.

I often wear ear plugs on long journeys on my bike, although most of the noise I'm trying to eliminate is wind roar rather than the sound of the bike. I don't think they make you less aware really.

As has already been mentioned, a big part of driving is the different senses which it delivers. Sound, smell etc. are a big part of driving for me. Driving nice backroads in the summer through the Cotswolds, listening to my engine / exhaust and music with the windows down makes the experience so much fun. Take the engine / exhaust noise out and it simply wouldn't be as enjoyable for me, if at all.

My car is relatively 'slow' compared to a Tesla - 0-60 in under 7 seconds. However, taking it to the redline line is so enjoyable. Even just driving along with the exhaust burbling away in the background and the intake upfront makes it feel special.

I think we have to accept that everyone is different. Some people hate exhaust / engine noise for whatever reason, others like me love it. I certainly don't feel embarrassed having a loudish car and any EV that wants to prove how fast they are can go ahead, really couldn't care about one aspect of sense in the outright acceleration.

Exactly.
I did the same for years when riding, leccy custom fit earplugs to eliminate wind roar etc., especially as I was already a tinnitus sufferer when I started riding motorbikes in my 30's.

If the measure of show and go is to beat a P100D off the lights, I'd imagine virtually everything for sale today on 2 wheels or 4 is all show no go.

Agree with most except singles. They always sound st. Especially in a scooter or bike with a fart can. Appalling racket.

Some twins are OK or even brilliant - usually in bikes. Not really a fan of the chuff chuff noise of a 2Cv or Twinair.

Triples - always

Fours - diesels sound grim to shockingly bad.. Petrol cars vary from humdrum to amazing. Japanese fours in bikes give some of the best sounds known to mankind.

Just about all 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12 petrol is the bollx.

Some diesels in those configurations sound OK to pleasant (when warm) but rarely (If ever) hold a candle to the equivalent petrol in terms of sound.

Better economy and less range anxiety if you're bothered about things like that.

I quite like my farty upshifts in my Cupra.

They don't happen very often due to where/how I drive it.

It's certainly a much quieter car than my previous E36 or 335i.

is in fact the finest sounding engine this side of Formula 1.

But I continue to insist that there is no formula for deciding whether an engine sounds good or bad based purely on configuration and cylinder count.

Hell yes.....

Back in 1984/5, a good mate of mine bought a CBX, which had a 6 into 1 system on it, as well as a some aftermarket Jap tuning firm cams in it.........what a sound that thing made...!!

I particularly enjoy the deep rumble of a muted V8, it's quite discreet but also a nice sound when 'pressing on'. Same goes, to a slightly lesser extent, for a nice 6.

I detest the current trend for the overly loud popping and banging of a 4 cylinder car. It just screams, in my opinion, boy racer/trying too hard.

I'm completely ambivalent about an EV's lack of sound. In a way, it's nice they can accelerate without all the pomp of an ICE, but there always feels like something is missing.

However, live and let live I say.

Oooo, 2 strokes ! I used to have a 350 YPVS with a Stan Stephens stage 3 tune and a pair of his expansion pipes. When it hit the power band it would absolutely scream. Funnily enough, no one ever wanted to ride behind me though laugh

I live in London next to a very busy main road. Not far from traffic lights so cars are generally all backed up idling outside my front window. It's not the various exhaust types that are anoying but the seriously loud / bass stereo systems vibrating everything around them. I assume it must be hell iside the actual car.
