yes Had the question been "best saloon car", I think the thread would legitimately be full of German cars... but for me personally there's not a single modern German saloon which belongs in the top 10 "best looking"; probably not even in the top 50.

Each to their own though.
Pistonheads............where BMW worshipping is everything rolleyes

But why can't a popular piece of industrial design also be attractive?

I've never had a BM or an Audi but I love many of the designs. Just because I may well see one particular model day on day out doesn't detract from the fact that it has a particulary well-resolved design.

Big difference between 'attractive' and 'best looking'

Jodie Foster was 'attractive', Audrey Hepburn was one of the 'best looking'

Not dislike. If someone said post a capable or even fast saloon car. The. BMW have made many that fit this bill. But best looking! I’ve owned a few BMW’s and have no dislike of the brand at all. But almost all of their cars ever are pretty boring to look at.
Completely subjective beauty in the eye of the beholder an all that . I love the m5s myself but we’ve had lotus Carlton’s cosworths cortinas europas etc the Carlton was a nice car . But that interior is shocking !

Yeah but some of the arguments seem to be conflating volumes with styling. ie if too many are produced they can never be "best looking" let alone attractive.

Doesn't make sense.

I think that's a good nomination for the best looking modern(ish) saloon car.

Why the BMW hate? They've made some lovely saloons, especially the E39 M5.
It's also a 20 year old car that looks nice still today. Half the Alfas posted may have looked good in their day but haven't aged well at all imo, plus don't get me started on the Maseratis....

This looked sooo good ten years ago but suddenly doesn't look as good as it did! Better than a 156 though?

The e39 is probably an excellent car. And it looks no worse today than when new. But the problem is. It just looked boring and dull when new. It’s hardly automotive art is it.

And unless you are at a location owned by BMW. You’d be hard pressed to find pictures of a regular e39 framed and being displayed on the wall to others.

Or put it another way. If this was best looking sports car or super car. How many would have lines similar to an e39? None, because it’s just a rather dull uninteresting thing to look at. It has no flare, no visual excitement. And surely if you are talking best looking, then these are likely important properties.

How it drives or how fast it goes have absolutely no bearing on best looking.

I think era plays an important part in some peoples views. Growing up, one of the cars that sticks in memory was the Ford Orion Ghia with XR3 kit cloud9

I've just googled a picture to put on here and my god my opinion has changed somewhat!!

This back in the day as well.....

Agree off subject but to be fair most pin up cars, are a pin up car because of the power plant ! Big v12/v10 etc . With big chunk of horse power . ( talking befor all the rescent turbo gen of cars )

Actually I did know they existed as I saw one at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1973 (I think).

So here is the Monica 560, which I thought at the time looked simply stunning - and still looks pretty good IMHO!

Engine was a 5.6 litre Chrysler V8 - hence the 560 name.

That's a Monteverdi 375/4 behind it.
