I don’t think white is helping it in profile.

On a more down to Earth note, I always thought the E39 in M-Sport trim was just about perfect.

The worst looking BMW 5 series ever made, perhaps! Bloated and tubby, but also generic!

My plan A, the IMO exceptional E38, has already made it on the thread -- which is comforting. So a couple of alternatives.

Alfa 159. Still _so_ pretty. Especially as it's somewhat an exercise to hide overhangs coming with the non ideal starting point of transverse front engine.

Audi A4 B6. No nonsense industrial design and still "Vorsprung durch Technik" in spirit -- (the "single frame" crap that followed -> meh).

And while we are with Audi, the Ro 80 needs a mention. Fifty two years old and still relevant.

Hm. But now that I have the "Dieter Rams" spectacles on -- perhaps the pinnacle is actually the Type 44 Audi 100?

Engineering driven design, simplified where possible. This unfortunately just does not sells cars anymore. Is it beautiful? The longer you look / think about it, the more it becomes so...

For me, it's the Series 1 XJ6 (though I wouldn't say no to a Series 2 or 3). The X308 posted above would also be a contender.

No offence, but I don't think there's ever been a good looking Alfa Romeo made...They are pug ugly at the front. (imo)

(I'm not saying they aren't capable cars)

My vote goes to the series 1 Jaguar XJ6. (My dad had probably one of the first 4.2 ones in the country)...everywhere he parked it, it drew a crowd around it peering through the windows (seriously)...notes were put on his windscreen offering him £500 over list. (It was £2200 new)

Same here - I'm afraid I just can't see the attraction in generic German stuff. My choice (soon to be slated too, probably hehe ) ...

1965/66 Lincoln Continental. Not only the best looking, but the ultimate in 4-door saloon cool.

I'd pick most 1960s Americana over the European equivalents, though.

Sticking with the Audi theme, the original D3 A8 is a devilishly handsome brute and set the tone for all Audi design language since. Trouble is all subsequent versions have been progressively less pure, watered down and generic in the looks department. The original D3 was definitely the high water mark for A8 designs.
