Many of the suggestions submitted appear to be coloured by what those cars represent in terms of performance or driving characteristics rather than any inherent beauty.
If you consider for example that an M5 or an Evo is the the best looking saloon ( and you might be right, it's subjective isn't it ) then surely you must consider a 520d or a Lancer 1500 just as handsome?
The nomination of the Alfa 156 in it's most basic form ( without the sill extensions ) shows the true spirit of the thread.
Why would a Lancer 1500 look as good as an Evo? They look quite different. Same with an M5 vs 520d. As with all things, it's the small details that make them look good - larger wheels to fill the arches, nicer body trim, aerodynamic changes, nice exhaust, maybe a spoiler/wing if you like that sort of thing etc... all combine to make them look better as an overall package. If you consider for example that an M5 or an Evo is the the best looking saloon ( and you might be right, it's subjective isn't it ) then surely you must consider a 520d or a Lancer 1500 just as handsome?

There have been lots of other suggestions in which effort has gone into making the basic shape of the car elegant, well proportioned and distinctive regardless of whether it is max-power spec or not.

Surely this thread is pointless, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, no?
Not pointless at all.I started by thinking inside my own box yesterday evening and thanks to the contributions of the other members I think we’ve been on a really interesting journey, appreciating different design styles and ideas.
I’ve really enjoyed seeing some of the wonderful images.
There have been some lovely cars on this thread, Lagonda, Monteverdi, and I have always liked the xj6 and S. But this came up on a local sales site, and it is one I have always lusted after. I was too late, sadly.
1972 Imperial. This one probably doesn't have the optional abs, which put them 6 years ahead of Mercedes.

Loving this thread. We certainly all have very different ideas don’t we!
My nominations are
1931 Bentley 8 litre saloon by h.j mulliner
Daimler double 6 series 3
Maserati QP series 1
Maserati QP series 5 (early one with small wheels)
Lincoln continental clap door
Merc 300 sel 6.9
Citroen DS
Then finally when driving yesterday I thought what’s the best looking saloon currently in production. Not fastest or best handling or most desirable. Pure looks only for me it’s the Volvo s90

Forget the 10 to a dozen BMWs, it has to be Italian and its not an Alfa

Italian for me too. I am biased. Here’s mine in Corsica last year. Seven years in on ownership and still don’t tire of the shape.
