What out-gunned the M5 by 1985?
Plenty of sporty saloons, but the M5 put a supercar engine in a saloon and a new genre was born, Thema 8.32 being a close follow-on.
Lotus Cortina was 'just' a tuned Cortina, and more about the suspension that implanted supercar engine.

1981, 330hp. Although admittedly slightly rarer, and from a time when there was a greater demarcation between BMW M and Alpina products
Interesting thing about the E28 M5 is that it only came into existence as M-division had some spare line capacity and weren’t happy trying to fit the M88 engine into an E30, so went with the next saloon size up instead

My nomination. Pininfarina were on a roll with their designs for Peugeot around this time.
Had an identical one to this, one of the sweetest handling cars I've ever driven. Even the base models were handsome things. Passed one on the motorway driving up from the Alps a couple of weeks ago - they're tiny!Edited by BrassMan on Thursday 18th April 11:11

The Jaguar Mk II 3.8 had 190hp at the start of the 1960s and had the same engine as the E-Type.
As much as they're an iconic car the look of them still takes you back to the 60's where's the XJ6 can fit in any decade since it's creation. I notice lots of people are posting photos of BMWs and Maseratis(own one myself) but they don't come close to the XJ6, the fact that the XJ6 is not a rare sight and has been prone to rust over the years has no relevance on the the title of this threadGassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
