If it's at a Ford dealer I doubt they'll be using a Gates kit and water pump, they'll be using the genuine Ford bits. They will probably be somewhat more expensive than after market Gates bits.
You do know ford don't make timing belts right. The main dealer part is likely too be a gates kit in a main dealer part. If you go too Kia for a clutch for example it will be a luk clutch in a main dealer box.

Well seeing as I've worked in the motor trade for only 23 years I've got a rough idea of what's what.

It doesn't matter who made the parts in the Ford branded box, it'll still cost more than an 'aftermarket' kit.

If you can DIY with the correct tool, why not buy it then re-sell on Ebay - you might 'lose' a bit on the sale, but overall you'll be quids in smile

I'm half way through replacing belt on a 1.25 Duratec.
Should be finished by next year.
Can't get a bolt undone.

Just to update this, I bought the Gates kit plus special tools and did the job myself. Although it was a bit of a faff, I still think the main dealer is taking the piss at £500+.

I did the belt and pump on a 59 plate 1250 (Yamaha design) Fester a while back, was simple enough.

Did you have to lock the crank at TDC via the flywheel on that engine?

One of the easiest belts to change.
No special tools needed just a bottle of tippex.
On some zetecs the belt doesn't drive the water pump but.. to change the pump possibly at a later date means the belt has to be removed to get to the rear most pump bolt so may as well be done at cambelt change anyway.
Local workshop I use for all my trade cars £200 Inc the kit.
Most likely £260 retail.

Ford wanted £540, and 3 Indys £400. Maybe your workshop spins the crank stretch bolt off and back on with an impact gun, without locking the crank. My crank pulley isn't keyed onto the crank, I preferred to lock the crank. The tool to lock the vvt cam pulleys is cheap, so I wasn't interested in faffing around with tipex either.

It'll be in a Ford box but it's still a Gates kit. Gates supply Ford OE.

Doesn't make one bit of difference to the price though - the dealers will use their own parts.

If fitters earnings are still bonus and private work driven, nothing would surprise me.
