My fave V8s though are the Chevy small blocks, ideally race tuned multiple carbed 302's.

Roger that. (US definition, not UK definition wink )

Albeit with Chevrolet's large-block 7.0 litre unit. Aluminium. And available as a semi-stressed element of the chassis.

I was standing next to an M8F in the pit at Silverstone a couple of years ago when it started up. It caught the attention nicely - and everybody within sight suddenly had an ear to ear grin. I love the smallblocks in F5000 cars etc, but there is something animalistic about a a big block in race spec - in contrast to the trademark rugga rugga rugga song of more housetrained versions

Not particularly reliable, as I recall. If they made it half-way through a race that seemed to be considered a success.
I remember when one showed-up at Sebring a few years back - much vaunted to show the septics how it was done - I don't think it made it past night practice before it st it's pants.

Maybe but this thread is about V8 noise, not reliability...

Absolutely! Almost reaching, grasping. Just the right combination of menacing and ludicrous.

A proper Chrysler Hemi (not the modern Hemi's that are only a marketing name) from a Charger or something.

Modern Hemi - looks pretty hemispherical to me...

Not sure if it's been mentioned already but a while (16 years) ago, Ford teamed up with Roush and made a one-off Mustang. It was called the Boss Mustang and it had a 9.9L Cross Plane V8. Possibly the most brutal sounding V8 road car ever, especially at idle. Hopefully I haven't oversold this. Particularly enjoyed the bit where the driver gives it a bootful at the end.

Favourite V8 noise for production cars is probably McLaren Mercedes SLR. A lesson in how much bass one can shove into an engine note. Ferrari F355 sounded nice at the top end. V8 Ferraris since then, I'm afraid I don't subscribe to the hype

Least favourite would I'm afraid have to be the V8 that powered the Lotus Esprit. Literally sounded flat (pun sort of intended) like any generic IL4.

Very aggressive sounding engine.

And of course, I have to mentioned the old Le Mans Corvettes from the early 2000s.

Another memorable V8 was the Merc in the Saubers at Le Mans. Nothing else sounded like them. There was a level of bass, octaves below all the screamers.

Don’t think anyone’s mentioned a side piped chevy yet, with no crossover it’s effectively two straight 4’s giving a very unique sound. Can confirm they are deafeningly loud with spiral baffles, near enough open headers.

In a similar vein, the Mercedes SLR McLaren - supercharged cross-plane V8 with each bank exhausting separately behind each front wheel. I can hear the similarities with your example!

Still a crossplane V8, though, you'll only get a four-banger sound with a flat plane crank, the rumble is still there because of the firing order.

M119 quad-cam, basically the W124 500E motor. Also, these cars weren't actually built by Sauber, the chassis were actually constructed on the industrial estate next to Bookham railway station in Surrey...
