These figures seem quite mild, especially the 320 torque. My car is too old to have the filter but made 390 ft/lb on a “low torque” APR stage 1. Surely the filter can’t be that restrictive.

Interestingly, I went from a Megane 275 Cup S to the golf and don’t really miss the Renault. Two possible reasons:
1) I have a TVR for real fun duties so am not relying on my daily to be all things at once. The Golf is massively better than the Renault except when you’re really on it.
2) I bought the manual. A DSG may have bored me by now but the manual (with uprated bushings and a short shifter) is pretty good and adds some involvement. With the extra power and torque it’s a very good car and the extra grunt wakes it up, especially with everything switched off. I’d go so far to say that I have the perfect R now although of course even more power is always good.

Understeer? Try increasing rear tyre pressures slightly and dropping the front. The chassis is excellent but very tyre/pressure sensitive (as a good chassis usually is). Mine is nailed to its line with perfect pressures and alignment on PS4S tyres all round. You can actually get the back to step out instead if you’re committed...

Honestly what is the point, i dont get this car, its rapid but utterly uninvolving to drive and adding more power isent what it needs. Its too quick for the road as it is.
Yeah, it's a hard life. Too much power, too quick for the road, too much sex, too much money, too much wine, too much beer......oh the hedonism, kill me now.

The only thing wrong with the Golf R is those stupid tailpipes. Golfs should come with 2 little pipes on the left, the end.

M3 and M5 are the true 4 pipe kings. All these Golf shadies are just imitating.

Auto car, What car, Evo, Pistonheads, Top Gear, Fifth Gear and Car magazine all say it's a great drive but I'm sure you probably know better.
Likely the guy has one/driven one and this is his opinion of it, just because some journalists think its a good car doesnt mean everyone does. Lemmings will always go with the flow and wont have their own opinion, sounds like you fit in well there..

Well I can honestly say the gti pp is a hoot and handles well

Bridlington to Wakefield in 58 mins didn’t bat an eye just got on with it

Not so sure an R would be any faster tbh the diff in the performance pack does a Stirling job and the handling is absolutely sublime

Are the lemmings the reviewers who road test the car and like it, or the people who read the reviews and buy it?

Don’t buy one with keyless ignition. Simples.

Agree. Had one and it’s “just” a fast Golf.
Dangerous license loser. It’s completely out of hand. I’m going back to an MX-5.

If you touch the door handle during the locking phase, keyless is disabled for that pass. Next unlock insists on key blip to unlock.

Indeed. To anyone that has a clue the handling of the R and GTI is actually very good. The chassis is very stiff, it changes direction really well and the damping is very nicely judged - all noticeably better than VAG cars of previous generations.

I would criticise the R and GTI for several things, electric steering/enhanced noise/blandish engine etc, but the handling and chassis are very good.
It's certainly very good. The problem is, compared to some of its rivals, it's just not very interesting.

Why does it need two pipes? It's not a two cylinder, so surely one would suffice? Alternatively, who blinkin' cares. Outside of the PH, I doubt most people give a monkey's uncle whether it has the "correct" amount of tailpipes.

I do think 4 is abit overkill when you consider the RS Audi’s only have 2! I’d be happy with one rs oval or 2 at the most!

The GPF doesn't seem overly restrictive with a mild tune, I have a JB4 on my 2019 Cupra (same engine) and it made 350/350 which is the same sort of figures the pre WLTP cars are making when tuned in the same way.
Yeah, doesn't seem too bad tbh. The main gripe with it will be the lack of noise. I've heard, but unsure if it's 100% true, that WLTP models now don't come with a resonator as standard, so just the usual cat and back box, in an effort to make it sound a bit better.

Unsure on the results though.

Had my R for over 3 years and agree with alot of whats already been said. As a civilised daily lugger / all rounder with fair bit of poke and lots of grip its outstanding, better at it than anything ive owned. I get the dull label, to say the steering lacks feels is being kind, I came to it from a mk5 GTI and really missed its enthusuasic fizz and go kart feel. As it creeps to 4 yrs ownership im really not sure what to replace it with, will probably hold on for another year then see whats out there (like i said last year!).
