I owned the earlier version of the Sportbrake, now owned by my younger son. It has the portfolio trim option with Meridian sound. It has served us both very well - and reliably. On motorway driving it has proved remarkably fuel efficient, delivering over 50 mpg.

I thought about buying its successor, the current model, but never got around to looking at it. I was put off by the new cabin in the new XF saloon when it first appeared. On such issues can buying decisions be made.

In passing I think that the Skoda and Jaguar are targeting different sub segments of the market.
It does seem that the original Sportbrake was the best of all worlds with all the benefits and improvements of the X250 facelift (same Jaguar modified AJD-V6 engine, minor niggles ironed out, lovely classic interior, brilliant sound system etc) but none of the issues of the X260 (Ingenium engine, ubiquitous interior, crazy adblue problem etc).

Something I noticed with the X260 is that the 25d 240 and the 30d 300 seem to running bang on the max torque limit for diesels with the ZF transmissions, surely that can't be good?

Needed a bigger car for a large dog and SUVs were not cutting it. Still needed 4x4 considering where I live. Drove Audi 6, BM 5, and Jag. No contest. Especially with a HUGE discount from JLR.

Can live with a 4 pot as the nearest fuel is a 40 mile round trip!

I highly recommend a test drive if you're in the market, the chassis is really, really good.

(OK it's not an R600... but my dog won't fit in one wink )
Looks great.

I agree with you on the chassis front, I was genuinely surprised at how good they are to drive. The outgoing "S" model, with the V6, must be something else.

I don't get this Q Car, 'Flying under the radar' view.

Having bland styling isn't really a plus point.
Taking your funder out in a Skoda sends a different message from a Golf R. Doesn’t need to be about speeding!

I wouldn't describe the Skoda as ugly by any means, quite hansom in some ways. Just not worth 38K.
Yep, and soon to be seen in the minicab queue outside your local station biggrin

So after almost 300K miles in and Audi A4 Avant and 196k Miles in and Audi A6 Avant. I was impresed with my son's '66 plate Octavia Vrs. As a consequence of which having tried most other estates I've just bought a '66 plate Superb SEL DSG estate with 55k miles for a little more than the cost difference between the Jag and Skoda in your test, which should leave me some spare to but a toy!

I saw a current shape XJ outside station on thursday, also there were several E-Class, a 5, 7 series and a large Audi so the Superb will be in good company.
