I too have a beard. I've had old Land Rovers. The first time I drove a car was a Series 2 on a hill farm on Ilkley Moor. I sat on the farmers knee, steering whilst he did the pedals.
I was 6 or 7.
Ever since then, I've been desperate for a Defender. TD5/Puma Engined 90 S/W - painted Stornaway Grey, Zambezi Silver or Black. Heated Recaros, decent stereo and a snorkel. General Grabber A/T tyres. I never bought one, because there's always been a better car for the job.
I'll never off-road it, but I live in the countryside with a dog that likes to get muddy and a wife who, like me, wants to look cool when we go to nice places.
I'm the perfect candidate for a new one - and when they've ironed out the problems and I've got a sports car out of my system, my name will be on the order form.
I'll take mine as a Short wheel base, with a big stereo, comfy seats, a snorkel and chunky tyres. Ideally in dark green with a tan interior. Lovely stuff.
I'm in your camp - all except the beard bit.I was 6 or 7.

I'd have one... Not sure I'd have in instead of the Mustang, but I'd have one.

Judging by the video and teaser campaign so far - yes, it is. Its a different kind of cool to the old Defender, certainly, but in my mind it is "cooler" than everything else in the segment or related segment
Cooler than a Range Rover
Cooler than a Discovery 5
Cooler than any of the "dual purpose" pickups - L200, Ranger, Navara etc
Cooler than all the other SUVs - Qashqai, Sportage, Kodiaq, Tucson, Model X, X5/3/7
The only thing it might NOT be cooler than, is a Jimny

I guess the only issue here is, is a Fake Defender really all that cool? Shiny and expensive yes and a great way to willy wave. But cool, nah I'm not really so sure it'll meet this.I was 6 or 7.

I'm also pretty sure that it's an actual real Defender, not a Chinese knock-off, so I'm not wholly sure how it can be a fake....

For the record, I'm not saying I wouldn't have one. I've owned RR's and Disco's in the past. And this appears to be aimed at a similar market. However it does seem to be far more mainstream SUV targetted and a lot less specialised than in the past.I'd have one... Not sure I'd have in instead of the Mustang, but I'd have one.
As for being cool, I guess that is something difficult for many new cars. Especially ones that aren't niche in what they do or offer.
The Mustang is cool because it's a Pony (or muscle) car in the UK and the only one on sale here. Plus despite the IRS, it still sticks to a proven pony car formula.
The new Defender is likely to be as cool as this was at launch time. (PS I like these and have owned one )
Complete with their 'lifestyle accessory' interior from Conran Design:
But doesn't have the cool factor of this:

How is it more capable and what way specifically?
In what way do you think it won’t be?*- Please try not to support your “argument” with the same twenty pictures of heavily-modified cars deliberately trying to get stuck on giant obstacles which every sane person would just drive around

The only thing it might NOT be cooler than, is a Jimny
I'd have said for the UK market, the Wrangler, Jimny (despite being a lot cheaper), maybe Land Cruiser, Shogun and perhaps things like the Ranger Raptor.
The LC is ugly and not cool at all. The Shogun I like, but again rather lacks coolness.
The Jimny is cool because it's so small and it is a "proper" off roader with a ladder chassis and live axles. Without the latter it really wouldn't be a proper off roader and wouldn't be cool. Just like the Vitara really isn't cool these days, it's not quite brown paper bag. But not far off.
The Wrangler is again cool because of it's abilities and design. Live axles, ladder chassis, removable roof/doors, fold down windscreen etc. Can be bought with lockers front and rear and electronically detachable anti roll bars. In the 4x4 world, such things are very cool
A bit like a divers watch, you may never use all of the features. But it's cool to have them just in case!!!
The Raptor is cool because it was built to do 100mph off road and comes with very cool long travel Fox suspension, among other things and additional styling.
Owning a vehicle designed to be able to get air and survive at speed certainly ranks as very cool in my book.
If we are talking US market. They don't get the Jimny. But they do get some other funky 4x4's that would likely be seen as competition to a Defender.
The Tacoma TRD Pro from Toyota. It too has Fox shocks, but is quite different to the Ranger Raptor. It has it's own coolness with something called "Crawl control".
And the ZR2 Bison from Chevy. It has magnetic shocks, lockers and comes some proper tyres too. Lots of cool things about it.
Will be interesting to see what this Defender brings to the table. I'm sure it'll have "Terrain Response". But that is just a fancy name for traction control. The rest just seems Disco 4 in a slightly more funky body.
So the question to ask is, how cool is a Disco 3 or 4?

Firstly I think that the last people on earth to be the arbiters of cool are middle aged men on a car forum... I also think that 'cool' is the wrong term. 'Classless' might be a better one. A Disco 3/4 and to a lesser extent the D5 are a do it all, pull anything, go anywhere in lots of comfort, air suspensioned barge. I have always seen the Discovery (rightly or wrongly) as the comfortable version of the Defender (90% of the off road ability, 100 x better refinement).
Most importantly however is that it is not a RRS nor an Evoke, nor a
The new Defender needs to sit somewhere and I can only see it sitting alongside/replacing the Discovery. I just can't see it occupying the same space as Ford Ranger or similar. I fear it may end up a bit G Wagon/Kahn - be all about the big shiny wheels and bolt on bits
I just don't see the Wrangler as a cool car.
As capable as it is, and with the proper heritage to back itself up, but to me, it isn't cool. In the UK. In the USA, it would be different, but over here, I've never seen one that has made me think "that's cool" - I'd always think "nah, Land Rover"
And of course there's the issue, its entirely down to individual opinion
Still, looking back at the title of this thread - "The toughest most capable Land Rover yet" - those are the words of Land Rover themselves. Whatever you might think, Land Rover are telling us its better than anything that has gone before it. How they measure that, compared to the previous model/s...?

Err... what do you think Crawl Control is? Surely you’ve heard of Land Rover’s All Terrain Progress Control? Will be interesting to see what this Defender brings to the table. I'm sure it'll have "Terrain Response". But that is just a fancy name for traction control
Basically, filtering the usual slide show, you think cool is either being antiquated or having chunky tyres and remote-reservoir shock absorbers.
