Extremely reliable, but slow and heavy on fuel for the performance. They’re still permanent AWD after all. Make great runabouts in the winter though.
I picked up a 2005 WRX wagon for winter duties a few years back.
My second outing with an Impreza after a Norway tour of duty a decade ago.

Mechanically very reliable but looking a bit tatty now with lacquer peel on the exterior plastics.
Still a great drive even if it has an image problem.
Here she is on winter steels/Crossclimates.

It’s an honest portrayal of my experience, like it, lump it, I don’t really mind/care.

And what does a semi bald 'consultant' drive I wonder?

Looked at a RA earlier. Not sure about the mini sunroof wink

Quite taken with it, so will be heading over for a test drive once it’s ready.

Yes, they had an RA-R but it’s a step too far for what I need.

It’s also £65k, which I expect would make it the most expensive ‘Newage’ Impreza road car ever sold in the UK hehe

Just recently bought a 2003 JDM STi myself. Awesome machine, have wanted one for a long time!

I suspect that will be for sale for some time!

It is an awesome machine though and done minuscule miles. Collectors item, not for me. Like I have £65k to spend on a car anyway.

Just wondering for anyone who might have owned the non-STI or WRX models, how do the 'normal' versions of the impreza fair in terms of handling, reliability etc?? I'm curious about the impreza as it's something different to having a normal hatchback. also potentially cheaper to run.

this goes for that area of 4door cars and the newer 5door hatchbacks.
Unless you absolutely need a low ratio gearbox and diff lock (in which case a Forester is a better off road car) just buy a WRX.

I’ve kind of fallen for the RA Hawkeye but still don’t fully understand if the WR1, which was the one I set out for would be that much worse?

I said this on another forum, but WR1s are for people who don’t know an awful lot about Imprezas, but like the colour.

Widetrack JDM STIs (2004-07) are the ones that everyone who knows a bit about these cars want, with the 2001-03 models close behind.

I do want the diff, and the wide track seems preferable. RA it is then.

WR1 is a decent car, first UK car to have a DCCD-A transmission.

The RA is a good car no doubt but I don't feel it justifies the £8k premium over a widetrack STi with dccd personally although it is obviously rarer and so will have higher value come resale which may negate the issue.

This is my friends that I have recently driven 150miles in and then a couple of 20mins sessions on track at Silverstone so I feel it's a good enough test drive to get a feel for it.

One thing I find incredibly annoying (it's not the first impreza that I have had this same problem whilst driving on track) is the fuel surge when if only has 1/4 tank of petrol in making the car lose all power when coming out of a fast corner as per half way through this video:

https://youtu.be/TtOg9dRMkdk

The car was fine in the previous session but started playing up in this one. The seemingly 40L tank will be "interesting" on 'Ring trips.

The car feels quite neutral although also a bit understeery even if the diff is set down unlike an evo which feels more tail happy. Apparently this can be cured with different anti roll bars etc. I also found the steering less communicative than a GC8.

Still a lovely car though but he managed to cook the brand new brakes when he went out in his last session so I'd think if you were tracking it you'd do well to upgrade those.

It was also annoying for the passenger not having a sun visor or handle when on track and there is no boot release or any carpet to make the boot usable yet it retains air conditioning. I could forgive all of this if it felt much different to a normal widetrack STi to drive but I don't feel it does.

It’s a 50 litre tank, as normal Newage cars are 60.

Curious as we ran it on the red light for a few laps and then went to fill it up and it only took 38L. I doubt it has 12L left in the tank especially as we were having the fuel issue but a quick google suggests you are correct. It certainly is a juicy beast with just a remap from Zen.
