This could be a serious rival to the ST if they price it right. It was the one car I wish had been around when I bought my ST, here's hoping it will be a good one

This segment is starting to look like a bit of a walkover for the Fiesta now too. The Mini is more expensive, while the Polo doesn't seem to be that well-regarded. There isn't all that much else to choose from now. The Clio, 208 and Corsa are all dead.

It's a prime opportunity for Hyundai to gain some sales and really push the N brand forward. The price (especially PCP/HP) is going to have to be keen to tempt people out of the Fiesta though.

You make some excellent points.

With the French government apparently happy to entirely kill off their fast (or even normal) car segment with barely-achievable emissions limits in the near future, we won't have any more Williams / 172s / 182s / Trophys / R26.Rs / 106 GTis / 205 GTis / 208 GTis / etc. - that's a massive gap to fill, so Hyundai would be crazy not to exploit that fast/small/fun niche as fully as they can.

Allegedly coming next year with the next gen i20. Some local outlets quote Biermann as wanting N models to be part of the engineering brief for the cooking version hence introduction with the next gen only.

No idea if any of this is true...

Yes, read that it will be introduced with the next generation i20.. going to be second half of 2020.
