Great article. That sort of power out of an A-series is phenomenal. A few years ago my understanding was that 100bhp was about the best you'd get.

Particularly liked this line: 'We're approaching that corner at about 110-112mph. Just take a lift to get the nose tucked in, still in top gear, and then floor it. You need that lift to transfer the weight.' - passion!

Fantastic cars to blat about in.
Nice article smile As others have said, I am also quite surprised by the prices of Minis these days.

I had a Mini as my first car back in 1998. Back then MED were building 1380s with about 110bhp for road use and the Migilias were pumping out 130-140bhp in race trim. I imagine they still are.

I know that Swiftune are saying more is being squeezed out of them, but I don't really believe that. I read the Wizard tuning book from the 1980s and they had engines in there that were in the 130bhp range.

If I were to build a Mini now, I would go down the supercharged or turbo route.

Fair enough, but I think the point of the article was to draw attention to the skill involved in extracting ~130BHP from a NA, venerable lump never designed to get anywhere near that.

You could, of course, shoehorn an enormous V8 in the back but there comes a point when, well, it wouldn't really be a Mini, would it?

Indeed, and only 1293 and on twin 1.5" SU's - 130bhp is phenomenal with those restrictions!

...some serious headwork, blueprinting and outright black magic must be going on in the Swift emporium.

....and there are many privateer enthusiasts doing stuff which is just as good or better. This is my friends Mini almost complete - can you spot anything odd about it?

has it got a 16v hiding under the bonnet? looks very high at the front.

I assumed it had nothing under the bonnet!

Agree, especially as they doing it on Twin SUs. The Migilias Run Twin choke 50mm webbers and straight cut boxes if memory serves.

...no, to get the correct proportions the car is sectioned both in the midriff and also the upper part! Just think about that and look at the interior shot.

That's two horizontal slices through the entire car!

The work involved is simply mind boggling but Pete is a genius with a welder and a perfectionist to boot. The Trickett version also removes the seams but he wanted to be 'different'

Ooh yes lovely, wonder what sort of money that went for?
Very annoying website that though, chops the side off the pics, frustrating.

It was up for around £45k and I think it made that. After consignment charges Pete got quite a bit less

Seems crazy money if you just look dispassionately at what a Mini is, but given what standard ones are fetching now and also taking into account the skill that's gone into it that is actually good value. The current owner won't lose on it.

There is actually a cheaper way to get a Swiftune Mini....

Amazing workshop this and can only echo the other comments about Nick, top bloke!
