Not really sure where I stand on this one. My partner is working from home today and noticed workmen and traffic lights going up outside our house. Turns out BT OpenReach are digging up the road and pavement outside our house - it's the first we've heard of it.

My car is parked on my drive, but it's a short drive so its nose was pretty close to all the machinery digging up the pavement. A workman asks my partner to move the car in case it gets damaged. I think he was probably trying to be helpful, but the drive is tight, and the road complex with its sudden traffic light control. My partner doesn't really drive my car and hasn't ever manoeuvred it and in trying to get it out has dinged the bumper.

Now, obviously she has damaged the car, but she only damaged the car under the advice of a representative of BT OpenReach. They asked her to do something, with the suggestion that the car will get damaged if she doesn't comply, that has lead to the car getting damaged.

Had BT OpenReach made any attempt to contact us and explain their plans, I would have found somewhere else to store the car for the week and it would not be damaged, but they made no such efforts. Had they not chosen to dig up the road and ask for the car to be moved, it would not be damaged. Do you think I have a case to claim back the costs of repair?

I’m glad this thread is here, it might answer my quandary.

I wrote my car off on my commute this morning, if it hadn’t been for my employer specifying that I needed to work from the office, not from home, I wouldn’t have been driving it.

Can I expect them to recompense me?

Reminds me of a time that Ford indirectly punctured my tyre whilst i was driving to a service appointment that they said i must attend or else my warranty would be invalidated!

OP, you need to move your car again.

Send me the invoice when you crash it.

That’s nothing.
A few years ago, me and the Missus didn’t fancy anything on tv so we had an early night.
15 years later can I go after the BBC for back dated child maintence?

Now, if you were a true PH, powerfully built Company Director, you wouldn't be in this predicament right now as your driveway would be at least 300m away from the road and only accessible via electric gates, covered by Hikvision 4k CCTV and a newly purchased family protection dog.

Look on the bright side OP.
If the Openreach Guy was from mainland Europe then he won’t be around to give his so called advice in the near future.
Maybe,
scratchchin Have you thought of suing the Government as their Brexit delay obviously caused your Wifes accident?
Genuinely amazed that the BT lad wasn't described as looking Polish.

Come on OP. Must try harder. 4/10.

No need as you're not holding a heavy implement and suggesting it "might" get damaged if I don't comply...

It might have done, luckily for them your wife did it. Good skills from the workman I would suggest.

Workman warns your car "might" get damaged if you leave it immediately adjacent to their works = good.

Big Ron Kneecap warns you "might" have an accident if you don't pay your gambling debts = bad.

OP, do carry on trying to blame someone else for your partner's mediocre spatial skills. It's good fun.

I may have a claim, (this is a true story) Went to Macy D's to get some chicken nuggets and other crap food, drive through, didn't check the order, the toerags had only forgotten my curry sauce. They have form for this, previous order they forgot chips. Called them up, they apologized and said next time your in the Area pop in for a free Big Mac Meal! Happy days!!
So next time i was in the Area i popped in, true to their word i got a free Big Mac smile , went outside, got in my car , and a newly qualified driver pulled up next to me, messed up straightening her car and scratched my bloody bumper. I was a tad annoyed, then her husband turned up & threatened me, offered to pay cash then threatened me again. I had to pay to get my own bumper fixed in the end, my insurance still went up & it ruined my free Big Mac.
As crazy as it sounds in my head for months i blamed McDonalds for not putting in my curry sauce. I can see where the OP is coming from, he's clearly wrong , but it is bloody annoying

I'd be looking at suing the builders for making the driveway too short.

Ignore the middle man, go straight to the land owner who sold to the builder.

To be fair those roads with the “sudden traffic light control” can be a nightmare, I much prefer the roads with a more leisurely traffic light control.
